We go out to the animal shelter every few weeks to wander around and look. A couple of weeks ago there was a St Bernard there that I wanted so badly, but we definitely were in no position to get him then. I'm sure he's long gone by now :(

Labs are great dogs  My boss has a black Lab......... think he's on his way out tbh, starting to lose control of his bodily functions :wha: Think he's about 12 or 13....... great dog though, really loveable, think there'll be a few tears shed by all of us when he does go :|

My uncle used to have two golden retrievers, they were awesome dogs too  And, of course, we have a springer spaniel who is quite simply the best dog in the world :D

My german grandparents had a doberman on their farm, a guard dog. Absolutely 100% loyal and unshakably patient with kids. Would trust my life with one...

Reminded me of my German-Canadian friend's farm - Their german shepherd Wanda would know when I was coming by the noise my car made. I'd just traded cars, and the way this driveway was situated, you had to park, then walk down a very long path to get to the house.

I park and hear Wanda barking - she doesn't recognize the car, as I'd just bought a new one. I'm halfway down the lane and I see the dog. It's coming towards me at full gallop, teeth bared and ANGRY. I have time to look back and know I'll never make it back to my car, so I brace myself. She leaps right at my face, going for the throat and right in that moment I see her expression change from "intruder attack" angry to "oh shit, I know that guy".

I'm 6'2" and solid, but she knocks me down to the ground, and is whimpering and licking me profusely...and all day I'm at the farm she's at my side, nuzzling my arm as if to say "I'm sorry". And every time after that, she's my best buddy whenever I visit.

That dog would climb a ladder to get to her "perch" in the loft above the barn and loved to spook people, the barn cats and even its owner from that tall vantage point. It would give one giant "bark", stare, then walk away. So, don't tell me dogs have no emotions...that dog had a sense of humour!

If you get a dog, get a big awesome dog lance. I know you know it, but damn do they have the personalities to make the extra food and goofy size worth it. I've got a retriever and he's not small but he'll climb into your lap if you let him. Most hilarious and loving damn dog.

Duck “Doug” Silverman came into my life about 14 years ago. He was picked up by the State running through South Central with no collar, tags or chip. Nobody claimed or adopted him so a no-kill shelter took him in. That’s where I found him — at that shelter, in Van Nuys. Since then we have slept most every night together (and many lazy afternoons.) When we first met, the vet approximated his age at 5½ so I’d say he was about 19 as of yesterday, September 3, 2013.

He was a happy dog, though serene. And stoic. And he loved love.

Over the past few years he became blind, deaf, and arthritic. But with a great vet, good meds, and a first rate seeing-eye person named me, he truly seemed comfortable.

Recently, however, he stopped eating or drinking. He was skin and bones and so weak. I couldn’t figure out this hunger strike. Duck had never been political before. And then, over the weekend, I knew. It was time to let him go.

My boyfriend Kyle flew in late last night and took the day off from work to be with us. We laid in bed and massaged his tiny body, as we love to do – hearing his little “I’m in heaven” breaths.

The doctor came and Kyle, my sister, Laura and I laid on the bed. I held him close – in our usual spoon position and stroked him. I told him how loved he was, and thanked him for giving me such happiness and for his unwavering companionship and love. The doctor gave him a shot and he fell asleep, and then another that was basically an overdose of sleeping meds. I held him and kissed him and whispered to him well passed his passing. I picked him up and his body was limp – you don’t think about the head – it just falls. I held him so tight. And then finally, when his body lost its heat, and I could sense the doctor thinking about the imminent rush hour traffic, I handed him over.

14 years.

My longest relationship.

My only experience of maternal love.

My constant companion.

My best friend.

Duck.

Similar to Muddy's story...a friend of mine had a shepard for years and they travelled everywhere together..

I met the friend in grade 7 and he was one of the most grounded, unemotional people I've met. His mother passed away in grade 12 and my friend displayed no emotion (that we saw)

when it came time to put down his dog Rogue...my friend took him to the vets, held him as they gave the injection and then called us to give him a ride home....he was so upset he couldn't drive :(

When I think back about that day I remember him laying on the kitchen floor and not being able to move his back legs.. All three girls were sitting around him petting him and quietly talking to him for the last time.. You would probably be fine with a pet, being around one every day would give your allergies a tolerance to the pet. Same premise as getting allergy shots that inject you with small doses of what you are allergic to.

 not really....had some relatives that thought they would acclimatize me to pets....my throat closed after week 3 and back to the doc's

and tried the shots for cats when I was 13....had a reaction to the shots and had to stop

Pony

Really? Surprised you reacted to the shots.

Not surprised about the week 3 thing though. I'm usually in my 3rd week of ragweed season every year before my immune system gets overwhelmed and I go to the doc. Getting thrown into an environment with a full time pet to acclimate you? That's like jumping into a pot of boiling water.

I've tried various exposures my whole life....a few days for a couple of hours at a time....full on living and sleeping 24/7 in the infected habitat....15 minutes here and there...

I guess I'm like a girl I dated...she was allergic to milk products (not lactose intolerant) and she went through the same things as I did. The doc told her some people have severe allergic reactions that shots or pills won't touch...

Pony
12-12-2013, 11:11 PM
That's the way I am with Ragweed. The only way I get through fall every year is a big shot of Cortizone. That seems to get a little less effective every year though. I do have a 5 year plan for when the Cortizone stops working altogether......

for me cats are deadly...and embarrassing...some dogs I can take for a few hours, while others make me fee like I have the flu, red eyes, sneezing, congestion, even hives...

a friend moved into an apartment, we went there the first night with no furniture and played around on the floor....the place seemed clean, yet within 15 minutes I had one of the worst allergic reactions ever....she asked her landlord if the people before her had pets, landlord said they may have had a ferret

I didn't know ferret dander was so lethal

My Dad reacts like that with cats. I typically have a delayed reaction, minor symptoms at first but 6-12 hours later my throat closes up. I tolerate cats and dogs pretty well though most of the year. If my system is already fighting other seasonal allergies I have to make a point to avoid them.

I always grew up with a dog in the house and love all animals (not a big fan of ferrets), only reason I don't have one now is between being gone 8-10 hours every day and sleeping 8 hours a night I don't think it would be fair to the dog. I used to have the neighbors cat come visit a few nights a week, we got along just fine. He had his spot, I had mine and when he had enough of me he would meow at the door to be let back out. "see ya next time, cat."

I've had 2 dogs, a hamster, and 2 cockatiels. One dog had to be given away (he was way too mean to me when I was a little kid), so I didn't see him at his end, but when the other five passed on, I was a complete basket case.

One Last Ride
By Trooper Christopher Coscia

It was a cold snowy day, training was cancelled due to the snowstorm, and I was left with the unenviable task of when I should make the decision to put my partner of nearly nine years to sleep.

Dante was a great dog. He was big, beautiful, black and tan shepherd. I often described him as a look-a-like for the dog in the show “Run Joe Run,” for those old enough to remember that program. He had a regal look, with his big head, ears and large stature. He had his own personality. Most dogs are just dogs, but you sometimes run into ones that are somehow as much human as they are dog. A Type A dog was only to be touched by those closest to him, and sometimes not even by them.

Dante was best described as a one-person dog, and as tough as he was for other people to get close to, our relationship never waivered. Every morning when I opened the door to his kennel he would jump up on me, wrap his paws around my waist, get his morning greeting and pat from me, storm up the stairs, and push the door open ready to go to work.

During Dante’s career he was able to answer calls in towns as far west as Lee, North Adams, and Shutesbury, and calls as far east as Brighton, and even, for a few of his last successful calls, on the South Shore. Once he was able to track and locate a guy who had just murdered his girlfriend, and another time he located a cash seizure that was several times greater than the previous largest seizure in Commonwealth history. During his career he helped to rid the streets of drugs. He was able to locate and assist in the seizure of more than 1,000 grams of Heroin, more than 8,600 grams of cocaine (one seizure alone of more than 7 lbs. that had been canned mechanically), more than 1,000 lbs. of marijuana, and more than $14,000,000 in cash.

Dante was very intelligent; one day when I was out with him I made the mistake of teaching him to open the cruiser door -- a task which took five minutes once I showed him how. From that, Dante figured out that doors open with handles, and all you have to do is grab them with your mouth and pull or turn. He took this new knowledge and taught himself to slide open the door that separated us in the cruiser, his way to always be close to me. While on patrol he would occasionally stick his head through for his occasional ear rub. When you see such a powerful, intelligent dog so helpless at times somehow made the events that follow even harder.

It all started one day while taking Dante out to his kennel. He collapsed on me, falling like a rock with no control of his body. After several tests it was obvious to the vet that Dante had pulmonary hypertension, a disease of unknown cause that prevented him from getting enough oxygen to his lungs and making him collapse. The right side of his heart was enlarged, causing poor blood circulation. As the weeks went on, he started getting seizures because of the same lack of oxygen to his brain. He had one of these seizures in the yard the other day, and after I sat on the ground in the snow with him patting him calmly waiting for it to be over, I came in the house. Upon walking in, to my dismay, I realized my wife and two children had been intently watching us to make sure all was okay. But it wasn’t and when I walked in the door, my wife and daughter were crying, knowing what was to be coming, possibly sooner than we were ready. My son was sitting very somberly, thinking if we don’t dwell on it things it will get better. My son and daughter were 3 and 1 when I, respectively, when I got Dante. They knew him practically their entire lives.

The day came when it was time to take him to the vet for the inevitable. After more than 2,300 rides that we took together, the dog who had trouble making out to the yard just feet away sat upright in his car for One Last Ride.

It was a ride I had I delayed for eight hours, just driving around with him as we did so many times, struggling with the decision to put him down. He sat upright, alert as ever, checking the perimeter always on guard. How does the dog who can barely breathe remain upright and vigilant for so long?

I sit here writing this obituary in a parking lot not two miles before we reached our final destination. My story is as written, and although it jumps about it is written from the heart. I write this story with tears in my eyes and flowing freely down my face. Dante is still somehow sitting upright watching me as I write about him, every once in a while sticking his head through the cage, letting me know things will be alright. But the more he reassures me, the more I wonder if what I am doing is right. I am glad he made it through the holidays. My wife’s birthday was yesterday. I did not want to do that to her; for her to remember her birthday as the day we put down Dante would forever bring a tear to her eye. Much as it does to me as I write this with every new thought and remembrance of my partner, each paragraph brings a new thought and anguish for me.

Respectfully submitted.

You may recall me bitching about a little yappy dog next door? He's gone now :|

The youngest of 5 sisters took over her Mom's house years ago and she bought a dog for company as she lived alone. The little yapmeister was kind of a poodle cocker spaniel cross. The girl is around my age, very shy with a quiet and timid voice.

Teddy the wonderdog barked at everything. He was one of those dogs who would go racing out of the door at 2 am, full gallop, and start barking at something only he could sense.

I used to joke that he would snarl and bark if you put your hand over the fence to pet him...yet he would affectionately lick anything you stuck through the fence.

She'd take him out on walks every day, meeting older neighbors and kids and Teddy was always very affectionate in those situations.

He was 14 and got sick...it seems sudden, like he was out there barking himself hoarse just yesterday afternoon....

My father being the kind soul that he is, bought a card for the girl and her older sister. As I was signing it I kinda teared up and realized something - There was an absence of sound in our neighborhood. Like a vacuum on a still day....almost like every kid in the neighborhood had grown up and moved out simultaneously.

My neighbor is understandably upset. She has no friends and rarely left the house, other than to walk the dog. Her older sister told us that she's devastated, like one of their siblings had died.

I'm going to miss you Teddy. The neighborhood children will miss your spastic leaping and licking when out for a walk and getting adored by the masses. You were someones best friend for over a decade, she is missing you too little guy :(

IF YOU WANT TO CAUSE A COMMOTION IN ANY PSYCHOLOGY department or any other place where animal and human behaviour is studied, all that you have to do is to claim that your dog loves you. Skeptics, critics, and even some ardent supporters will pour out into the halls to argue the pros and cons of that statement.

Among the skeptics you will find the veterinarian Fred Metzger, of Pennsylvania State University, who claims that dogs probably don't feel love in the typical way humans do. Dogs make investments in human beings because it works for them. They have something to gain from putting so-called emotions out there. Metzger believes that dogs "love" us only as long as we continue to reward their behaviours with treats and attention.

For most dog owners, however, there is little doubt that dogs can truly love people. Take the story of Rocky and Rita from the Finger Lakes region of New York State, near Rochester.

Rocky was a solid 65-pound Boxer, classically colored with a chestnut brown coat and a white blaze on his chest. At the time of this story, Rocky was three years old and Rita was his eleven-year-old companion. Rocky had been given to Rita when he was ten weeks old, and she immediately bonded with him, petting him, handfeeding him, teaching him basic commands, and letting him sleep on her bed. Whenever she was not in school, the two were always together and within touching distance. The family would often fondly refer to the pair as "R and R."

Rita was a relatively timid and shy girl, and as the dog grew in stature he brought her a sense of security. When Rocky was next to her she felt confident enough to meet new people and to go to unfamiliar places. Rocky took on the roles, not only of friend and confidant, but also of defender.

When encountering strangers, he would often deliberately stand in front of Rita, as a sort of protective barrier. He seemed to be without fear, such as once when Rita was about to enter a store and two large men dressed in biker outfits burst out of the door, yelling at the shopkeeper and nearly knocking Rita over. Rocky rushed forward, putting himself between the frightened girl and the two threatening men. He braced himself and gave a low rumbling growl that carried such menace that the men backed off and gave the child and her guardian a wide berth.

There was, however, one flaw in Rocky's armour. It was a fear of water that was so extreme that it was almost pathological. Boxers are not strong swimmers in any event, and are often shy of the water. However, Rocky's fears stemmed from his puppyhood, when, at the age of seven weeks, he was sold to a family with an adolescent child. The boy had emotional problems and acted as if the attention bestowed on the new puppy somehow meant that he was less important. In a jealous rage, he put the puppy in a pillow case, knotted the top and threw it into a lake. Fortunately, the boy's father saw the incident and managed to retrieve the terrified puppy before it drowned. He scolded the boy and returned to the house. The next day the horrified parent saw his son standing waist-deep in the lake trying to drown the struggling puppy by holding him under water. This time Rocky was rescued and returned to the breeder for his own safety.

These early traumas made water the only thing that Rocky truly feared. When he came close to a body of water, he would try to pull back and seemed emotionally distressed. When Rita would go swimming in the lake, he would pace along the shore trembling and whimpering. He would watch her intently and would not relax until she returned to dry land.

One late afternoon, Rita's mother took R and R to an upscale shopping area. It was located along the edge of a lake and featured a short wooden boardwalk which was built along the shore over a sharp embankment that was 20 or 30 feet above the surface of the water. Rita was clomping along the boardwalk, enjoying the way the sounds of her footsteps were amplified by the wooden structure. It was then that a boy on a bicycle skidded on the damp wooden surface, hitting Rita at an angle which propelled her through an open section of the guard rail. She let out a shriek of pain and fear as she hurled outward and down, hitting the water face down, and then floating there unmoving.

Rita's mother was at the entrance of a store a hundred feet or so away. She rushed to the railing shouting for help. Rocky was already there, looking at the water, trembling in fear, and making sounds that seemed to be a combination of barks, whimpers, and yelps all rolled into one.

We can never know what went through that dog's mind as he stood looking at the water-the one thing that truly terrified him and that had nearly taken his life twice. Now here was a frightening body of water that seemed about to harm his little mistress. Whatever he was thinking, his love for Rita seemed to overpower his fear and he leapt out through the same open space in the rail and plunged into the water.

One can thank the genetic programming that allowed the dog to swim without any prior practice, and he immediately went to Rita and grabbed her by a shoulder strap on her dress. This caused her to roll over so that her face was out of the water and she gagged and coughed. Despite her dazed state she reached out and managed to cinch her hand in Rocky's collar, while the dog struggled to swim toward the shore. Fortunately the water was calm, they were not far from shore, and Rocky quickly reached a depth where his feet were on solid ground. He dragged Rita until her head was completely out of the water, and then stood beside her, licking her face, while he continued to tremble and whine. It would be several minutes before human rescuers would make it down the steep rocky embankment, and had it not been for Rocky, they surely would have arrived too late.

Rita and her family believe that it was only the big dog's love of the little girl that caused him to take what he must have considered a life-threatening action. This certainly casts doubt on Dr. Metzger's theory that dogs don't love us but act only out of self-interest. Why should Rocky behave in a way that he certainly felt would risk his life? Surely, if he was evaluating the costs and benefits of his actions then he would have known that, even in Rita's absence, the rest of the family would be around to feed him and take care of needs.

Marc Bekoff, a behavioural biologist at the University of Colorado, has a different interpretation. He notes that dogs are social animals. All social animals need emotions, in part as a means of communication-for instance you need to know to back off if another animal is growling. More importantly, however, emotions keep the social group together and motivate individuals to protect and support each other. Bekoff concludes that strong emotion is one of the foundations of social behaviour and is the basis of the connection between individuals in any social group, whether it is a pack, a family or just a couple in love.

Recent research has even identified some of the chemicals associated with feelings of love in humans. These include hormones such as oxytocin, which seems to help people form emotional bonds with each other. One of the triggers that causes oxytocin to be released is gentle physical touching, such as stroking. Dogs also produce oxytocin, and one of our common ways of interacting with dogs is to gently pet them, an action that probably releases this hormone associated with bonding. If dogs as social animals have an evolutionary need for close emotional ties, and they have the chemical mechanisms associated with loving, it makes sense to assume that they are capable of love, as we are.

Rocky's fear of the water was absolute, and never did abate. He continued to avoid it for the rest of his life and no one ever saw him so much as place a foot in the lake again. No one, at least not Rita or her family, ever doubted his love for her. He lived long enough to see an event occur which would not have happened had he not cared for her as much as he did. When Rita graduated from high school, she posed for a photo in her cap and gown. Beside her sat a now much older Boxer. The smiling girl had an arm around the dog, and her hand was cinched in his collar, as it was the day that Rocky unambiguously showed her just how much he loved her. ■

Last weekend one of his dogs wasn't eating, laying around, acting sick for a few days so they took him to the vet...vet said they have to do exploratory surgery. They opened up the dog, took out a bottle cap and sewed him back up again. Dog seems to be recovering.

Total bill would have been over 2600 dollars for imaging, drugs and exploratory time in O.R....coworker has been taking his dogs there for years so vet waves off 1100 bucks and only charges him for the actual surgery to remove the bottle cap

Tony's got a trip to the vets again this afternoon, he had a small growth removed from his eyelid a couple of weeks back and ever since then he's been really lethargic, just not himself at all :wha: He's still eating and drinking as normal but there's something not quite right........ fingers crossed it's nothing major!

Well they still can't find anything physically wrong with him :wha: Tests on his urine came back clean. They gave him a strong painkiller jab so he's even more lethargic now........ if he's not any better in the morning he'll be going back to the vets, poor wee bugger :(

Update?

He's still not 100%, i'm pretty sure he's damaged one of his hind legs....... he seems to kinda limp a bit when he first gets up :-k Waiting to hear back on follow up tests but i think my dad is gonna take him back to the vets and ask them to scan his left hind leg. He's still eating, drinking, pissing and crapping fine so i'm 90% sure it's either muscular or bone damage! Don't think it would be arthritis since it seemed to happen pretty much overnight!

“Dark day in our household: our oldest dog Mulder is dying. As I've spent the last year carrying him around like Hodor, I'm not taking this terribly well. They never tell you when you get a dog, but there is a price to pay for being the recipient of 17 years of unconditional love, loyalty and companionship: they take a huge chunk of your heart with them when they go. I'm reminded of a line from DOCTOR WHO, Series 2 - the "School Reunion" episode (which featured the return of Sara Jane Smith and the robot dog K-9, ironically enough): ‘You can spend the rest of your life with me... but I can't spend the rest of my life with you.’ And later, when Rose asks Sara Jane if she should go with the Doctor, Sara Jane responds ‘Some things are worth getting your heart broken for.’ Mulder was beyond worth it. Fuck, this hurts...”

So after my son made a comment recently after our loss of our Shepherd," I don't feel the security of having him anymore", and the void of our beloved pet, we went out and got two puppies. They are from the same family line as my previous Shepherd.
We looked at Rescues and Shelters locally first for GS pups, but had no luck. We went to our breeder and found these two brothers who were the last of the litter. They were having so much fun together and we couldn't bare to separate them.
Here's Max and Zeus.

Back in 1981, legendary actor James “Jimmy” Stewart, the star of “It's a Wonderful Life” and too many other classics to list here, went on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” to share his hobby: poetry. The piece that he read was titled "I’ll Never Forget a Dog Named Beau" about Stewart’s golden retriever.

At first, the poem made Johnny and the audience laugh, but it had a very different effect in the end. Describing it can’t do it justice; it’s something you have to see — and feel — for yourself, so check out the video and read the text below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwGnCIdHQH0

Here’s the text of the poem:

He never came to me when I would call

Unless I had a tennis ball,

Or he felt like it,

But mostly he didn't come at all.

When he was young

He never learned to heel

Or sit or stay,

He did things his way.

Discipline was not his bag

But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.

He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,

And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.

He bit lots of folks from day to day,

The delivery boy was his favorite prey.

The gas man wouldn't read our meter,

He said we owned a real man-eater.

He set the house on fire

But the story's long to tell.

Suffice it to say that he survived

And the house survived as well.

On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,

He was always first out the door.

The Old One and I brought up the rear

Because our bones were sore.

He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,

What a beautiful pair they were!

And if it was still light and the tourists were out,

They created a bit of a stir.

But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks

And with a frown on his face look around.

It was just to make sure that the Old One was there

And would follow him where he was bound.

We are early-to-bedders at our house -- I guess I'm the first to retire.

And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me

And get up from his place by the fire.

He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,

And I'd give him one for a while.

He would push it under the bed with his nose

And I'd fish it out with a smile.

And before very long He'd tire of the ball

And be asleep in his corner In no time at all.

And there were nights when I'd feel him Climb upon our bed

And lie between us,

And I'd pat his head.

And there were nights when I'd feel this stare

And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there

And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.

And sometimes I'd feel him sigh and I think I know the reason why.

He would wake up at night

And he would have this fear

Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,

And he'd be glad to have me near.

And now he's dead.

And there are nights when I think I feel him

Climb upon our bed and lie between us,

And I pat his head.

And there are nights when I think I feel that stare

And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,

But he's not there.

Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,

I'll always love a dog named Beau.

A book titled “Why We Love the Dogs We Do: How to Find the Dog That Matches Your Personality” published in 2000 contains some information on what happened to Beau, Stewart’s beloved dog. Sadly, the poem isn’t fiction. Wikipedia summarizes it:

“While shooting a movie in Arizona, Stewart received a phone call from Dr. Keagy, his veterinarian, who informed him that Beau was terminally ill, and that Gloria sought his permission to perform euthanasia. Stewart declined to give a reply over the phone, and told Keagy to ‘keep him alive and I'll be there.’ Stewart requested several days' leave, which allowed him to spend some time with Beau before granting the doctor permission to euthanize the sick dog. Following the procedure, Stewart sat in his car for ten minutes to clear his eyes of tears. Stewart later remembered: ‘After [Beau] died there were a lot of nights when I was certain that I could feel him get into bed beside me and I would reach out and pat his head. The feeling was so real that I wrote a poem about it and how much it hurt to realize that he wasn’t going to be there any more.’”

I’m sure all you dog lovers out there know exactly how that must have felt.

It was only two months ago that Sophia’s human, Alyson, discovered that her beloved dog had bone cancer. The diagnosis was dire and Alyson made the difficult decision to have Sophia put to sleep.

The beautiful pup was Alyson’s emotional support system through difficult times in her life and Alyson wanted to do something special for her best friend. She sent an email to Chill Factore, an indoor skiing and snowboarding center, on the off chance that they would allow Sophia one last romp in her favorite thing – snow.

http://i.imgur.com/X7AQ9Gn.jpg

Alyson never thought they’d contact her, but on the day that Sophia was set to be put down, she heard back. The kind people of Chill Factore were more than happy to let Sophia have one last day playing in the snow.

Watch the video below to see how much Sophia loved having her final wish come true.
