Lindsay Lohan will be charged with the crime of lying to police after her car accident in June on Pacific Coast Highway ... TMZ has learned.

We broke the story ... Lohan told cops she was NOT behind the wheel of her Porsche when it slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler. Fact is she was -- according to multiple witnesses.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... the case will be filed as a misdemeanor by the Santa Monica City Attorney ... possibly this week.

The charge could spell huge trouble for Lindsay, because she's currently on probation for the jewelry heist. The criminal filing could trigger a probation violation, and Judge Stephanie Sautner -- the jewelry judge -- could send her to the slammer for a long, long time.

And law enforcement sources tell us ... cops found prescription pills in her purse after the crash. Witnesses tell us pills were also scattered in her trunk. Our sources say authorities were prepared to charge LiLo with drug crimes, but Lindsay's lawyer, Shawn Holley, gave cops documentations from Lindsay's doctor, saying the pills were properly prescribed. Authorities then backed off that charge.

As for the charge of lying to cops, Lindsay almost dodged that bullet. You may recall, after the accident, Lindsay went to the hospital where she was interviewed by cops, and that's when she told them she wasn't behind the wheel. Her lawyer, Shawn Holley, made a mad dash for the hospital to muzzle her client, but she was a few minutes too late.

Comedy and crime -- it's all about timing.

After Lindsay Lohan is charged with lying to cops in connection with a horrific car accident last summer, the Los Angeles City Attorney will ask the judge to throw the embattled actress behind bars for violating terms of her probation in her necklace theft case, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

"Once Lindsay is formally charged with lying to cops, the Los Angeles City Attorney's office will ask for a formal probation violation hearing," a law enforcement source tells RadarOnline.com exclusively. "At the conclusion of the probation hearing prosecutors will ask the judge to sentence Lindsay to significant time in jail, up to one year. Prosecutors and cops think there is more than enough evidence for the judge to find Lindsay in violation of probation and are hopeful that this time, she will face the maximum penalty for lying to cops. Remember, the burden is much lower for a probation violation, just the fact that Lindsay will be charged with a crime is enough for her probation to be revoked and sent to jail."

As previously reported, Lohan rear ended a dump truck on Pacific Coast Highway last summer. The Porsche, driven by Lindsay, was totaled and sent the actress and her assistant to the emergency room. Both were later released and didn't suffer serious injuries. However, in the moments before Lohan's legal ace attorney, Shawn Holley, arrived at the emergency room the Mean Girls star had already told cops she wasn't driving. Investigators have confirmed with multiple eyewitnesses that Lilo was in fact driving.

Compounding matters, the tow truck driver Lindsay rear ended, James Johnson, will testify that her camp tried to pay him off immediately after the accident.

"Johnson has also told cops that Lindsay was absolutely trying to leave the scene of the accident without exchanging information with him. James' testimony will be a key part of the probation violation proceedings," the insider says. "Prosecutors are extremely frustrated that Lindsay continues to act as if she is above the law and feel that the judicial system hasn't punished her harshly enough for her to stop her wild antics."

Lindsay remains on probation from her necklace theft case, and under the terms of her probation has to obey all laws.
