A University of Colorado student has been arrested for menacing after he wore a mask depicting the Joker from the Batman series in a Boulder movie theater Sunday night.

The 17-year-old male wore the mask and a clown hat into the Century Boulder Theater, located at 1710 29th St., causing several patrons to run out of the building and call police, according to a news release from Boulder police.

The part-time student has been charged with five counts of misdemeanor menacing, police said.

The teen told police he wore the mask to scare his friends and planned to dress as the Joker character for Halloween next year, police said.

Police found a mask in a shopping bag when they took the student into custody. The teen told police he was aware of the July 20 attack during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at an Aurora theater in which 12 people were killed and 58 were wounded, police said.

The teen did not have a weapon, and he did not make threats , police said. However, because the five people reporting the incident felt imminent fear for their personal safety and ran from the theater because of that fear, the juvenile has been charged, police said.

The suspect was taken to a juvenile detention facility.
