View Full Version : 20 States Petition to Secede From U.S. After Obama Victory

DemonGeminiX

Citizens ostensibly upset that President Obama won another four-year term in office are petitioning the White House’s “We The People” site to allow 20 states to secede from the union.

From Gawker:

Petitions for secession filed from Louisiana and Texas have already received well over 10,000 signatures. Per the website’s own rules, petitions that garner 25,000 signatures or more within 30 days require a response from the Obama administration.

Similar petitions from Alabama, Tennessee, and, interestingly, Oregon, are also gaining traction, with each receiving thousands of supporters over the weekend alone.

Other states trying to secede: Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Colorado, New Jersey, Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama, Michigan and Georgia. A petition was also started for the state of New York by someone in North Dakota (in fact, the petition’s creator, C R from Grand Forks, N.D., appears to be the same person behind the North Dakota one).

However, before you get yourself into a tizzy over whether the U.S. will soon be 20 states short of 50, Gawker points out that the petitions are most likely much ado about nothing.

As unilateral secession was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, it remains to be seen if this movement is more than a toothless temper tantrum thrown by armchair revolutionaries.

Examples of DELUSION

He has delusions about how much money he can make at that job.

He is living under the delusion that he is incapable of making mistakes.

She is under the delusion that we will finish on time.

As the illness progressed, his delusions took over and he had violent outbursts.

Because I am delusional I'm sure they'd have NO PROBLEM securing the border - we havent attempted securing the border any more than europe has attempted implementing austerity measures.

The funny thing about politics is this : (IMO) You can never have both sides run the country at the same time in history...meaning Democrats get in and do their thing for four years. You can never have the Republicans in for the same four years and do a comparison....which party did better with the issues and resources on hand, at that particular time in history?

It's like having a kid and saying - I wish we would have let him do this when he was growing up...when in fact, you can never have the same kid and try a different parenting skill to see if kid B turns out any different from the change

Looks like the Obama administration may have to respond to a petition seeking the green light for Texas to secede from the United States—one of 20 such requests filed on the official White House website since Election Day.

At the time of the writing of this post, the Texas secession petition had garnered 25,318 signatures—above the White House's self-imposed rules for requiring a reply.

(A "Recount the election!" petition filed Nov. 10 had 16,238 signatures. "Regulate Internet Pornography"? Not a big winner. It was filed Nov. 4 and had only 501 signatures.)

The White House may opt out of replying. Under its own rules, "To avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition."

Other secession petitions include requests for Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan, Colorado, Oregon, New Jersey, North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama and New York. (Spoiler alert: No, the White House won't approve secession.)

Here's the text of the Texas petition:

The U.S. continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the U.S. suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect its citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

The White House won't approve secession but I doubt they could stop. Assad might be able to get the military to attack his own people but no way in hell US soldiers would attack Texas (or whoever).

US soldiers are sworn to protect the Constitution. Nothing in the Constitution says a state can't leave the union.

I grew up in the US military unlike most of you here. If you think I'm wrong about US troops attacking US citizens you are sadly mistaken. The military is overwhelmingly Conservative.

Because people were fed lies and misinformation.

Think about this. How many people do you know think that the words "separation of church and state" is in the Constitution or the 1st Amendment?

Many would think it is and they'd all be wrong. Funny how when people keep saying something, even if it's false, it gets some credence.

The South fired the first shot. What was the North supposed to do? It wasn't a peaceful succession like the one being proposed here.

Would Lincoln have convinced the Army to attack the South if the South hadn't fired the first shot? We'll never know.

The two situations, while similar, are vastly different.

Considering Texas has 25 million + residents and only 100,000+ (and not all from Texas, mind you) signed that petition, I'd say that there's a pretty good chance that secession isn't the popular option in the state.
