I am listening to the new Foo Fighter record called "Wasting Light". I am a big fan of this band to begin with so I was looking forward to this record. This record has some of the most interesting riffs I have ever heard out of this band. Very fresh but more technical and while still maintaining that classic Foo Fighter sound and groove which is impressive. They did seemed to experiment with some new tones and textures which was refreshing to me. Also the over all production quality seems better than past efforts. which is always nice. It is arguable their best effort yet and that is saying something.

Not a bad Record for being recorded in a Garage sorta speak. I've been a loyal fan since it started. Have you seen the documentary that's out right now? It's interesting to see all the dynamics they've been through these past few years. Even commenting on past Guitarists and drummers and why Pat Smear left and came back.

Social Distortion - Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (2011)

This is the first record out of these guys in 6 years and you would have never known it. It seems no matter how much time passes Social Distortion is suspended in it. Not only do these guys have a timeless sound but they seem to be timeless themselves and I love that about them. Social D has always had this very nostalgic feel about them and I think it was perfect timing considering the state of the world we live in. In my opinion it may not be the best S.D. record but its one I think a lot of people were waiting for at the same time. 2 thumbs up on this one so grab some friends put this record on, have a few beers and talk about the good times.

Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue (2009)

This is the first recording from the band in almost 14 years due to the passing of a much beloved front man Layne Staley. I would have never thought this band would record again considering how unique a sound the band had and how big of a part Layne's voice played a roll in that sound. Typically the rule of thumb is you lose a singer the band is done. Very few bands throughout history have survived the leaving or death of a singer, this is not the case here. William DuVall does not try to fill the shoes of Layne but instead just carves a new niche just for him. However it is hard to deny the similarities DuVall does have to Layne. He does do a great job of working with the bands sound and at times is hauntingly similar to Layne in both style and timber. In a true comparison I think Duvall is the better singer but Layne did have a certain rasp to his voice no other will ever possess. So there is a pretty even trade off in that respect. As far as the writing is concerned its what you would expect from Alice in Chains. They are in true form and the writing is as good as ever. The over all album is just stunning in writing, execution and production. With new life breathed into this band I look forward to there next release.
