A man was punched in the eye during a robbery Friday in the University District for $20 and a six-pack of Dr. Pepper.

The incident happened about 11:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Northeast 52nd Street. Two male suspects jumped out of the bushes and punched the victim in the eye before taking the victim’s cash and the Dr. Pepper six-pack. They fled the scene on foot.

“Two possible suspects were detained several blocks away but the victim was unable to positively identify them,” Detective Renee Witt said in a statement. “One of the detained suspects has a prior conviction for robbery and both not only fit the suspect description, they were both seen running from the immediate area of the crime.”

But because the victim didn’t identify them as the men who assaulted him, both suspects were released after police gathered their information. The victim declined medical treatment did not sustain serious injuries, other than the loss of his Dr. Pepper.
