DRIVERS suffering the midnight munchies have been busted in a cunning police operation designed to catch hungry drug and booze impaired drivers.

Operation McBusted nabbed 95 hungry drivers in the Elsternwick area as they left 24-hour fast food outlets and on nearby back streets last weekend.

Twenty-three drivers exceeded the legal blood alcohol limit, with a further five drivers testing positive for drugs.

State Highway Patrol Inspector David Griffin said the results were appalling and should send a strong message to motorists who thought they could avoid police by travelling home on the back roads after a night out.

"These results show that there’s still a percentage of drivers out there who think they can take risks on our roads and they won't get caught,’’ he said.

"Operations like this show if you’ve been drinking or taking drugs, you can be caught anywhere, any time - not just on main roads or by booze and drug buses.’’

Operation McBusted, which ran alongside a number of booze buses operating in the area, detected:

FOUR disqualified/unlicensed

FIVE unregistered vehicles

12 mobile phone

17 defective vehicles

29 other traffic offences

Victoria Police’s Summer Stay campaign will run across Victoria until January 9.

You missed my point - when the government wastes too much of its citizens money and they start hurting for cash, they get out the drawing board and try to figure out how else they might be able to fleece their flock of underlings that should freely give as much money as possible to the be all end all powerful government.

It could just be that they are going after dangerous drivers - it is the time of year for these types of crack downs.

 When isnt it "the time of year for these sorts of crackdowns?" Need to keep the plebs in check 24/7/365! Woh, its thxgiving...oh, its christmas....new years...that mid january doldrums...mlk & presidents day....eh, ides of march! All perfectly reasonable excuses to go out and bother hundreds of people so that they might catch a few.

Instead of doing it the old fashioned way, pulling over drivers that arent driving correctly...

Sorry, I'm just not comfortable with police states where the cops are the ultimate authority and have free reign to impugn upon your life however they see fit "because you're on their turf."

but aren't they saving tax payers money just waiting at fast food places rather than travelling around burning fuel in their cars?

 the correct answer was "it doesnt matter" since nobody of lesser importance ever sees what they spend on fuel anyway, its just a budget line item that is what it is.

but, when they are out there specifically accosting swaths of the population, looking for any and every way to pick someone up on something...

...you didnt see them say how many tickets they issued for tail lights, registration/insurance violations, any traffic prompts coming out of the places, etc ;)
