EMOTIONAL Michelle Heaton burst into tears yesterday as she talked about the agony of having her breasts removed.

The Liberty X singer said she went through hell following the double mastectomy three weeks ago but added that it “really is worth it”.

Mum-of-one Michelle, 33, had the preventive surgery after being diagnosed with a mutated gene. This meant she had an 80 per cent chance of developing breast cancer and a 30 per cent likelihood of getting ovarian cancer.

The star said she “didn’t know where I was” in the three days after the op.

Talking on ITV1’s Lorraine show, she added: “It was hell – it was a week of hell, I’m not going to lie.

“If someone had told me how good I’d feel now, I wouldn’t have believed them and it has only been three weeks. So there is light at the end of the tunnel and any woman going through this or who is worried about the surgery … you will be fine, you will be absolutely fine. It really is all worth it.”

Michelle said the reconstructive surgery on her breasts was “great”, adding: “When I first saw them, I just burst into tears with relief and realised they are normal.”

The tears returned yesterday as she watched a clip of her saying goodbye to husband Hugh Hanley and their 11-month-old daughter, Faith, before the op.

Michelle, who carries the BRCA2 cancer gene, said: “As a mum, you never want to anticipate leaving your child without a mum. The whole point of this was to get the dark cloud away from my head and to get on with life and I’m on that path now so I want to look towards the future.”

She told host Lorraine Kelly the worst thing about the op was not being able to cuddle Faith.

Michelle, who looked a picture of health at the ITV studios on London’s South Bank, said: “I kind of feel like I have an elephant on my chest.

“It’s not the most comfortable thing but I’m on the road to recovery.”

She revealed plans to delay having her ovaries removed so she can try for another baby.

Michelle said: “I’ve been through the mill the last year. I’d love a year of no hospital dramas so I want to take it easy, have a bit of fun, look after my baby and enjoy watching her grow up.”
