There are rather strange phobias and fears out there. Some people are afraid of the clichéd dangers – heights, snakes, spiders, enclosed spaces, etc. – while others have more interesting and absurd fears – pennies, Friday the 13th, shampoo, little people, etc. I, for one – breaking the fourth wall here – am absolutely terrified of soup. It instills a fear in me that no one is able to understand. Thinking about soup, looking at soup, talking about soup, and even writing about soup terrifies me so much that I break out into a cold sweat and crawl under a table. However, I am not alone. Honey Boo Boo’s mom, June Shannon, has an intense fear of mayonnaise.
In the upcoming Halloween episode of TLC’s breakout hit show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Mama June’s kids try to help her overcome her deadly fear of mayo. Shannon talks about her fear in an Us Weekly promo clip of the upcoming episode, saying, “The reason why is because when I was growing up, the babysitter I had, we ate mayonnaise sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack. I can’t talk about it. It is making my flesh crawl.” You’re not alone, June, you’re not alone… Shannon will, however, “eat potato salad or tuna salad with mayonnaise if someone else makes it and she can’t see the mayo.”
Her daughter, Jessica “Chubbs”, said to her mom, “I think it’s stupid that you’re scared of mayonnaise, Mama. I mean seriously, it’s mayonnaise. It’s white, and it’s mayonnaise. C’mon. That’s like ketchup, but it’s just white.”
Side soup dish: A fear of food is not that uncommon. I once knew a woman who was afraid of anything tomato – she believed it looked like blood. The brain is weird like that. Don’t giggle – I know you want to, but don’t.
