Four teenagers were arrested today after a man was allegedly assaulted by revellers dressed as Smurfs because he refused to light one of their cigarettes.

The 37-year-old victim was approached by the Smurfs in a convenience store in Melbourne, Australia, in the early hours of the morning.

One of them, who was dressed as Papa Smurf, asked for a cigarette and demanded the man light it before giving it to him.

When the victim refused, he was attacked a short time later, Victoria police said.

The man claimed the three other Smurfs appeared to be trying to jump-start a car at the time of the alleged assault, which happened at 1am on Sunday in Pascoe Vale.

Detectives released CCTV footage of the Smurfs in an effort to speak to the men.

At the time, they said it was not clear whether the men in fancy dress were responsible for the attack.

Speaking to The Age, a spokesman said: 'We are trying to piece it all together to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the assault.

'Because the men dressed as Smurfs spoke to the man before the assault we are interested in talking to them to find out what happened.'

Four men - three 19-year-olds and an 18-year-old - have since been arrested after handing themselves into police.

They are all expected to be charged on summons with assault-related offences.
