A woman has been given back a breast she had removed in an operation after she told health officials in Sweden she wanted to give it a 'dignified burial.'

Selina Jansson, from Jonkoping, said she couldn't stand the idea of her breast ending up at a surgical waste centre.

So instead she told hospital officials she wanted to decide its final resting place.

An email from a manager at the bio-waste plant sent to Sweden's National Board of Health said: 'We have received an unusual request and I would like advice on the legal aspects of the issue.

'A patient has had her breast removed and wants it back to bury it.'

It was found that there were no legal obstacles to prevent the return of body parts as long as there was no risk of infection spreading.

'There is, in principle, no rule that prevents the release of a patient's tissue or body part to the patient following an operation or amputation as long as it doesn't pose a public health risk,' said a board spokesman.
