The Dallas Stars make a joke about Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o on the scoreboard during Saturday night's home opener.

The Dallas Stars opened the season on Saturday night with a reported sellout crowd.

They have had empty seats for three months because of the NHL lockout, but that didn't stop them from using one empty seat as a joke.

The Dallas Stars tweeted on Saturday night: "Our cameras at AAC are sharp! They just caught Manti Te'o's girlfriend in section 125 on the jumbotron! "

And sure enough, at the game, they showed an empty seat on the big screen with a message of "Welcome to the game! Manti Te'o's girlfriend."

Te’o, the star linebacker from Notre Dame, claimed he had a girlfriend, who supposedly died of leukemia the same day Te’o lost his grandmother during the season. It turned out to be an Internet hoax. She simply didn’t exist, but was the creation of a Twitter account.

This isn't the first time the Stars have made waves on Twitter this month.

Earlier in January, the Stars and Cowboys got into a sarcastic fight over Tony Romo.

It started when the Cowboys, responding to a tweet by someone trumpeting the impending return of baseball’s spring training, made a dismissive remark about hockey.

“Similarly in the category of nobody-cares … the NHL is back!” the Cowboys’ post read.

Before the biting comment was retracted, somebody with access to the Stars’ account shot back, offering a not-so-subtle reminder that Romo has yet to lead the Cowboys to a championship during the seven seasons he has been the starting quarterback.

With an attached picture of former Stars great Mike Modano holding the Stanley Cup above his head in 1999, the tweet included 28 caustic characters arranged thusly: “At least our #9 got the job done.”

The Cowboys, not willing to continue the fight, tried to make peace.

Expressing regret for starting the skirmish in a different tweet, they wrote back the following message to the Stars: “Our sincere apologies for the inappropriate tweet posted accidentally to our account. Good luck this season.”

“Apology accepted,” the Stars replied.

But by then, the damage to the face of the Cowboys was done.

Someone over at the Stars has a wicked sense of humor. They've shown it several times through the years, but it usually doesn't get noticed outside of the DFW area.

The local team was doing a Manti Te'o's girlfriend "kiss cam".

Leave the kid alone! Every man posting on this forum has had imaginary girlfriends in his past, even if only during the brief time it takes to masturbate.
