WASHINGTON — South Carolina, Texas and Idaho — at the very least — are vying to get Erie-based Magpul, a manufacturer of ammunition magazines for guns, to relocate to their respective states, saying they are more hospitable than Colorado to the Second Amendment.
South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan sent a letter to Magpul this week, saying Dixie would be a happier place for the manufacturing plant because of its low taxes and "freedom-loving" people.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry also sent a letter to Magpul and said there is no other state "that fits the definition of business-friendly like Texas."
Idaho's Economic Development Organization also made contact Wednesday.
Magpul is a manufacturing company that employs 400 people, including full-time workers and subcontractors, throughout the state. The company's chief operating officer told The Denver Post it would leave Colorado if the ban on high-capacity magazines became law.
"South Carolina would welcome Magpul with ope n arms," Duncan said. "South Carolina is a freedom-loving state. The Second Amendment is very near and dear not only to the folks in my district, but to folks in the entire state."
Duncan, a Republican, has been following the news inside Colorado's Capitol, where House lawmakers just passed four pieces of gun-control legislation. Among them is a proposed ban that would limit ammunition magazines to 15 rounds.
The proposed law now heads to the state Senate for debate. It would have to be signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper to become law. Hickenlooper has indicated early support for the bill.
His office had no comment on the other state offers Wednesday.
Officials at Magpul also did not respond to calls from The Denver Post on whether they were weighing any of the offers.
Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, invited Hickenlooper to tour the manufacturing facility Thursday.
"As elected officials, I think it is important that we educate ourselves on how legislation can affect our constituents, which is why I have arranged for a tour of Magpul's facility," Gardner said.
The governor, however, will be out of state.
