A Friendswood man was in the Galveston County Jail Thursday morning on $160,000 bond after police said he threw hammers at a street repair crew.

Darron Lynn Koenig, 51, was arrested Tuesday following the incident that began about 7:30 a.m. that day near his home in the 400 block of Oak Vista.

Contract workers doing street repairs for the city of Friendswood told police a man attacked them with a hammer.

One worker said the man was throwing hammers and had a knife, according to a news release from the Friendswood Police Department.

One worker's hard hat protected him from the hammer blows, while another was hit in the arm, but none required medical attention, the release said.

When officers arrived, Koenig barricaded himself in a tool shed at his residence and stayed there two hours while a tactical team and negotiators talked to him.

When it appeared he was trying to light the shed on fire, police used tear gas and a Taser to subdue him, the release said.

Koenig brandished a knife at the officers during the arrest, the release said.

According to the police department, Koenig has a history of violence.

In 2011, he attacked a neighbor who was walking a dog and in September 2009, he assaulted a police officer who came to his house on a disturbance call.

Online law enforcement records indicate he was discharged a month ago from five years deferred adjudication stemming from the 2009 charge.
