JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African cardinal who helped elect Pope Francis this week has told the BBC pedophilia is an illness and not a crime.

Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, the Catholic Archbishop of Durban, told BBC Radio 5 on Saturday that pedophilia was a "disorder" that needed to be treated.

"From my experience, pedophilia is actually an illness. It's not a criminal condition, it's an illness," he said.

Napier said he knew of at least two priests who became pedophiles after they were abused as children.

"Now don't tell me that those people are criminally responsible like somebody who chooses to do something like that. I don't think you can really take the position and say that person deserves to be punished. He was himself damaged."

The Catholic Church has had its image deeply tarnished by a widespread child sex abuse scandal.

Napier was one of the 115 cardinals in the Vatican conclave that elected Pope Francis on Wednesday, the BBC reported.

The first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, Francis has signaled a sharp change of style from his predecessor, Benedict, for the 1.2-billion-member Church, which is beset by scandals, intrigue and strife.

He said on Saturday the church should be poor and remember that its mission is to serve the poor.

seriously, you asshat? while it is definitely a sickness, it is also criminal. the two arent mutually exclusive and if you dont have the threat of incarceration, what the hell is there to stop sickfucks from committing these crimes?

Having the desire is a sickness until they act on it, once they start molesting or taking pictures or whatever, then it's a crime as well.

Kleptomania is an illness too, but you still can't steal shit. His logic is dumb.

Thank fuck this man was not in line to become the pope.

Sorry guys I am apologising on behalf of all South African men who have more than the minimum brain cells required to stay alive.

IDK....they claim alcoholism is an illness, why not deviant behavior?

alcoholism is an illness, driving under the influence, a crime.

deviant behavior casts too wide a net - you saying S&M should be an illness too?

No... .....if deviant behavior was a crime I'd be posting from Shawshank right now...

let me articulate my thought a little differently...

I hate pedos. In the world of crime they are the lowest IMO. I've read some excerpts from convicted child molesters and it's sad for another reason. One said - I've served a number of years in prison, done probation and I will still re offend the moment I get out. Chemical castration won't work, please do something to me surgically so I won't hurt these kids anymore.

So the guy above knows he has a problem (as most pedos do) and is begging for a method to make him stop the urges he knows are wrong. He's not alone, I've read a few instances where the perp isn't feeling guilty because he was caught, he knows damn well that his behavior is wrong on societal level yet can't help himself.

I'm no doctor but that implies a brain or hormonal dysfunction that triggers the urge. My analogy to alcoholics is sound...I used to think that alcoholics are just weak and can't control their addiction. Science says there's more to it than that so why not apply the same diagnosis to sexual deviants who break the law?
