Salem resident John Berry, 34, was eating a Carl’s Jr. hamburger and likely speeding when his vehicle hit a cable meant to prevent drivers from going on railroad tracks Sunday night.
According to Salem Police, Berry was driving eastbound where Boone Road becomes Eastland Avenue in a 2004 GMC van around 10:30 p.m.
Lt. Steve Birr of the Salem Police Department said that the airbags in Berry’s van deployed when he hit the cable and caused him further distraction.
The van then got stuck on the Union Pacific railroad tracks as a southbound Amtrak passenger train approached.
Luckily, Birr said, “he got out fine” before the train collided with the vehicle.
Nobody in the train was hurt, but Berry was cited for careless driving and the Amtrak was delayed for about 90 minutes.
Birr said the front of the engine sustained minor damage, namely to the snow plow and to the ditch light.
PGE spokesman Steve Corson said the incident damaged a pole and brought down a power line. One customer lost power from 11:49 p.m. to 12:16 a.m., he said.
The matter is still under investigation by railroad police.
