SALEM — Charges have been dropped against a former Salem High School science teacher who was facing allegations of having sex with a 17-year-old student while on school grounds, according to court records.

Joshua S. Williams, 28, of West Avenue, Woodstown, was dismissed of charges including sexual assault, sexual contact and official misconduct this week in Superior Court.

“We’re pleased that the charges were dismissed, and that Mr. Williams can move forward with his life and put this matter behind him,” said Williams’ attorney, John Eastlack Jr.

According to Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan, the alleged victim in the case indicated during a pre-trial conference that she did not wish to proceed with the charges.

As a result, charges against Williams were dismissed on Monday, said Lenahan.

The charges were initiated in April 2012, after the alleged victim, who was 17 years old at the time, filed a criminal complaint alleging that Williams performed an act of sexual penetration on her on Oct. 28, 2011.

School officials said previously that Williams was a first-year teacher with the district, having started in September 2011.

Williams was terminated from his position on April 12, 2012 after school officials met with the alleged victim and her parents.

Eastlack indicated that Williams will be pursuing reinstatement of his teaching certification, which was suspended because of the allegations.

He wouldn't have gotten away with it in Virginia... If the victim had dropped the charges the state would have picked them back up..
