Mt. ANGEL, Ore. (AP) — A city known for its annual Oktoberfest is not happy with the name of its newest bar — The Drunken German.
In a letter to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, Mt. Angel Mayor Andrew Otte says the name is offensive to some and reflects poorly on the city's Bavarian heritage.
Bar owner David Borchers told the Salem Statesman Journal he picked the name because it reflects his personality, and the name elicited laughter when he suggested it. He says he's as German as it gets, and doesn't consider the name an insult.
But Councilman Pete Wall says the Chamber of Commerce and others have worked hard to make Oktoberfest a family festival, and the name does not send a good message.
