BOSTON (AP) — Two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon have resulted in injuries.

Bloody spectators were being carried Monday to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners. Police wove through competitors as they ran back toward the course.

"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

Security for the Marathon is always high and it's been even higher since 9/11, so this was a well planned and thought out attack. As was mentioned by Goof, definitely terrorism, but they still don't know if it's international or domestic.

Such a shame....Patriots Day in Boston (local holiday) the running of the Marathon, and the Red Sox home game. Patriots Day is supposed to be a happy day, not a disaster like this. :(

It's a plain spreadsheet with a simple title: "I have a place to offer."

What follows is simply inspiring.

There are names, thousands of names of people in the Boston area with standing offers to help those displaced by the horrifying explosions near the finish line of Monday's Boston Marathon. By Monday evening, the Google document had become more than a resource for the stranded. It became a viral statement of solidarity from the proud people of Massachusetts.

Links to the list can be found on the front page of the Boston Globe website. "Have a place to offer?" the website reads. "Fill out this form."

There are email addresses and phone numbers for nearly every entry. And there are messages.

"I don't live in the city," reads one, "but can come get anyone who needs a place to stay."

"I live in Hopkinton," reads another, "but would happily drive anywhere to pick up a runner who needs food, shelter and comfort."

"Space for one person on a pull-out couch," goes a third. "Will cook you a nice meal too!"

The list goes on and on, filled with sudden patriots on a terrible Patriots Day. One man offers not only his place, but offers to sleep somewhere else so a stranded runner can sleep in his bed. One woman from Cambridge writes she will pay for the taxi ride from wherever. Someone from Somerville apologetically says he has to work late but he'll leave early and head straight home if anyone has a need.

Some messages are simple – "We've got couches!" – and some read like real-estate notices, describing the number of bedrooms and listing pets in case someone out there has an allergy. Some sound like text messages to old friends: "I just made soup!" It would have been more than enough to just put a name and email. Almost no one stopped at that.

The first entry appeared at 5:39 p.m., only a few hours after the explosions occurred. The most recent entry (as of this writing) comes two hours later, at 7:40. More than 4,000 people put their personal information on the Internet for everyone to see because they wanted total strangers to come over to their houses and rest and feel better. Think about that.

A random name picked out led us to Jonathan Zuker in Rockport. He picked up on the first ring.

"I was monitoring the Boston.com live blog," he says. "I run a cancer non-profit. We know a lot of people running for charities. When I saw they were looking for volunteers … anything you can do to help. At least extend that offer. We're all in this together."

Zuker was crushed when he heard about the explosions and the casualties. He describes the finish line at the marathon as "the happiest place on Earth." An attempt to ruin that would not stand with him, or anyone else for that matter. He was heartened but not at all surprised to see so many people rushing to assist.

"I think that's the best of our country," he said. "It's Patriots Day. It's uniquely ours."

Rockport isn't even close to Boston. Neither are a lot of towns on the list. But no matter. Maybe some runner, or runner's relative, will see this spreadsheet and imagine thousands of living-room lights being left on for them all over the Commonwealth.

"There's more good people out there than bad people," Zuker says. "And it's way more. The scales aren't even close."

He's right. There were perhaps one or two evildoers on Monday. And the list of good people goes on and on, growing by the minute, lined up in rows, ready to do anything to help.

Federal authorities late Monday removed several bags from an apartment in a nearby suburb. Police investigating the Boston Marathon bombing have also issued an alert for a rental van and for a hooded man who left the area before the blasts.

Boston was battered but vigilant on Tuesday as an army of federal agents raced to find out who attacked the city’s historic marathon, leaving three dead and more than 100 injured amid a war zone of shattered glass and bomb debris on Patriots Day.

As of Tuesday morning, no persons or group had claimed credit for twin explosions at the finish line near Boston’s Copley Square. The Pakistani Taliban, a group that has threatened the United States in the past, denied participation, according to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement officials questioned an injured Saudi national at a local hospital, but news stories indicated that the individual appears to have no connection to the case. The Boston Globe reported that he was simply a frightened spectator who had tried to flee but was tackled and restrained by bystanders.

On Monday night agents from the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and other law enforcement agencies raided a unit in a high-rise apartment on Ocean Drive in the seaside Boston suburb of Revere, according to information posted online by a participating local fire department. Several bags, including what appeared to be a large duffel bag, were removed from the scene. Authorities were mum as to the specifics of their suspicions but confirmed that the Revere search was related to the case.

Rep. William Keating (D) of Massachusetts, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, told a local CBS reporter that the two bombs at the finish line, which exploded seconds apart, had been stashed in trash receptacles and were clearly a “coordinated attack.” Authorities have discovered two other unexploded devices, he told Boston’s WBZ News.

Other reports said no unexploded devices had been found. A reported fire at Boston’s John F. Kennedy Presidential Library turned out to be the result of an electrical problem and was unrelated to the marathon bombs, according to Boston police.

NBC News reported that the explosive devices near the finish line had been packed with ball bearings to enhance their lethality. Doctors treating some of the 126 wounded at local hospitals said many had been hurt by metal shrapnel, though they added it was unclear whether the metal in question had simply been part of the environment or was the result of a shredded trash receptacle.

Police have issued an alert for a rental van that may have tried to gain access to the finish line area and for a man in dark clothing and a hood seen leaving the scene shortly before the blast, reported NBC. Surveillance video shows a hooded figure carrying two backpacks at about that time.

Among the dead is 8-year-old Martin Richard, whose father was running in the race. The boy's mother and sister were also gravely injured, according to a Boston Globe report. The family had gathered at the finish line for cheers and celebrations.

Although President Obama did not use the word “terrorism” in remarks to the nation Monday evening, other US officials made it clear that the bombing is being treated as a terrorist attack. That would make it the first such strike on US soil since Sept. 11, 2001, and a deadly reminder that it is impossible to armor all national activities against a terrorist threat.

One thing is clear: The bomber or bombers were not highly skilled. The explosive devices were relatively crude compared with those produced overseas by Al Qaeda or other radical Islamist terrorist groups, RAND Corp. terror expert Brian Jenkins told Los Angeles television. They were much smaller than the powerful truck bomb that Timothy McVeigh used to devastate the federal building in Oklahoma City in April 1995.

In that sense they were analogous to the pipe bombs that killed two and injured 100 in 1996 at Atlanta’s Centennial Park during the Olympics.

The fact that the target was an event of great significance to Boston but not particularly significant to the wider world could indicate that the bomber was a local or at least a native of the United States. The explosions occurred on April 15, tax day, which could be a further indication of a domestic connection.

But the bombs were not directed against a government building or institution, which is often a hallmark of disaffected, lone-wolf domestic terrorists, noted some terrorism analysts. And the style of the attack, in which one explosion was closely followed by another, mimics that used by numerous groups in the Middle East.

One government official told the Los Angeles Times that his guess would be “self-radicalized Islamic extremists from the area.”

Meanwhile, a large area of Back Bay Boston remained sealed off as an enormous outdoor crime scene. Police were working their way through a mountain of bags and other debris left by the fleeing crowd in an effort to ensure that no further explosives will detonate. Cities across the US tightened security, just in case – New York City dispatched police critical response teams to guard sensitive sights, while in Washington the Secret Service expanded the security perimeter around the White House.

In London, authorities were reviewing security plans for Sunday’s London Marathon, the next such major international race.

A picture posted on Twitter shows an individual walking on the roof directly overlooking one of the blasts at the Boston Marathon.

The picture of the mystery person was posted shortly after the terror attack and raises the eerily possibility that one of the perpetrators watched as the carnage was unleashed.

Law-enforcement sources told the New York Post that a 20-year-old Saudi man was detained at a Boston hospital.

Fox News reported that the suspect was badly burned.

He was taken into custody less than two hours after the 3pm blasts that have killed at least three people and injured more than 140.

It was not immediately clear whether the person on the roof had anything to do with the terror attack.

Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I've had it with humanity."

But I was wrong. I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."

Pure opinion and speculation but, I don't think the attacks are finished for some reason. The cowards who planned it were obviously aware of the tribute part of the run (Sandy Hook victims), so they won't hit some small venue like a Walmart grand opening because things like that are not visible enough, there's not enough emotion tied it...I pray I'm wrong about future targets

We like to think that our anti-terrorist forces have had 12 years to refine methods to catch these fuckwads. Methods that had to be originated from scratch after 9/11...yet we underestimate the terrorist's 'creativity' (pardon the expression) when it comes to mass murder and the targets that they select. Who would fly a plane into a building? Who would bomb a marathon? It's the next 'who' that scares me...

I'm starting to understand just a very small amount of the horror that people living in Ireland have suffered during the last 40 years...it doesn't even come down to a religious thing anymore (for me), because killing innocents in the name of ANYONE, is not true faith. It's cowardice personified and not even an act of war.

In all probability, the bombs went off just when they should have. Had they gone off earlier, it would have just been a handful of the pro racers that run the marathon every year. If you wait until later, you get much larger groups of all the amateurs showing up near the finish line and more families and friends to see their loved ones finish the race. You take out many more people by timing it like they did instead of having it detonate earlier when just a scant few were finishing the race.

A second victim in the Boston Marathon bombings has been identified: Krystle M. Campbell, a 29-year-old originally from Medford, Mass.

Her father, William A. Campbell Jr., told Yahoo News he's in shock that his daughter was killed.

"My daughter was the most lovable girl. She helped everybody, and I'm just so shocked right now. We're just devastated," he said. "She was a wonderful, wonderful girl. Always willing to lend a hand."

Campbell was at the finish line with a friend, Karen Rand, to cheer on her boyfriend, who was running the race. William Campbell said he doesn't know if Rand's boyfriend finished the race before the bombs went off.

Karen Rand survived, but was in surgery for her serious injuries through Monday night. Cheryl Rand Engelhardt, Karen Rand's sister-in-law, wrote on Facebook that Krystle's parents at first believed that Karen was their daughter, and that she had survived the attack, because Karen was carrying Krystle's ID. Krystle's family was finally ushered into Karen's hospital room after one of her leg surgeries by hospital staff, only to discover their daughter's friend instead of Krystle. Krystle was then declared missing, and the family found out on Tuesday she was among the dead.

More than 170 people were wounded—17 of them critically—and three were killed in the attacks, which occurred at 2:50 p.m. Monday near the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Campbell attended the University of Massachusetts-Boston and Medford High School.

The other identified victim, 8-year-old Martin Richard, was running from the first explosion with his family when the second blast killed him. His mother and 6-year-old sister were injured in the bombing as well.

“My dear son Martin has died from injuries sustained in the attack on Boston," Bill Richard, Martin's father, said in a statement Tuesday. "I ask that you continue to pray for my family as we remember Martin. We also ask for your patience and for privacy as we work to simultaneously grieve and recover."
