COOS BAY, Ore. -- A man teaching his 11-year-old daughter to drive on Friday ended the lesson in jail, after police say he drove away drunk after she crashed the pickup.

On Saturday at around 6 p.m., deputies responded to the Plainview RV Park on Cape Arago Hwy to a report of a hit and run accident.

Deputies said that during the course of the investigation it was learned the accident occurred while Ronald Lee Walter, 43, of Coos Bay, was allowing his 11-year-old daughter to drive his pickup around in the RV park.

The Sheriff's office says Walter was attempting to teach her how to drive.

Witnesses reported that the girl lost control of the vehicle and stuck another parked vehicle.

Deputies say Walter sent his daughter back to her residence in the RV Park before driving away from the scene without attempting to contact the owner.

Walter was quickly located at another residence, along with his damaged pickup.

Deputies say that after an investigation, Walter was found to have driven under the influence of alcohol and with a suspended license.

Walter was taken to the Coos County Jail, where deputies say a breath test showed his blood alcohol level to be .14%.

Walter was charged with DUII and misdemeanor driving while suspended, and the case is being referred to the District Attorney for charges of Reckless Endangering and Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver.

Authorities say no injuries were reported.
