A 56-year-old man who boarded a DART train naked faces a theft charge for allegedly snatching a cell phone and purse from a woman riding the train in northwest Dallas, according to police documents.
Danny Michael Derby was jailed on Friday on the state jail felony charge in connection with the theft, which was reported on March 26, according to police.
About 5:55 a.m. that day, the victim boarded a southbound train at the Walnut Hill/Denton Station. She sat down and, “noticed that the defendant ran up on the train totally naked and said, ‘I made it.’”
The woman called DART police via her cell phone to report the man, police said. The train left and the man sat down near her, cursed at her and asked her the time, the documents said.
The woman responded that she did not know the time and the man, identified as Derby, said, “Give me the phone,” police said.
Derby then snatched the phone from the woman, who was still on the line with police. He also grabbed her purse so forcefully “that it pulled the [victim] out of her seat of the train.”
He also kicked the woman as he pulled her purse away, police said.
Witnesses, including an off-duty Fort Worth marshal, intervened and detained Derby until DART police arrived.
Derby remains at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center. His bail has been set at $100,000.
