MovieGuide.org, a conservative Christian entertainment review website, recently took aim at Disney TV show Sofia the First.

MovieGuide.org's main criticism of Sofia the First is that she is the daughter of a single mother who marries a king.

MovieGuide.org cited statistics about all the horrible things that await children of single parents and reminded its readers: "Few single mothers marry a king who can turn their daughters into princesses."

According to MovieGuide.org:

It’s fine to promote honesty, grace and civility, but any message that undermines the traditional family is harmful. Children raised by their natural parents are far less likely to live in poverty, quit school, use drugs, commit crimes or spend time in prison. If Disney actually cares about the long-term well-being of children, it would promote the traditional family rather than the “modern family.”

It would even be of benefit to Disney to do so. Children raised by their natural parents have far more disposable income to spend on Disney tickets, theme parks and merchandise than do children raised by single mothers. Few single mothers marry a king who can turn their daughters into princesses. More often the daughter of a single mother becomes a single mother herself. The havoc wreaked on children is immense. The economic impact is severe.

However, MovieGuide.org did not cite any actual evidence that animated cartoon characters, regardless of their fictional upbringing, have any impact on anyone in the real world.

Sofia the First has also been criticized because the lead character is supposed to be Hispanic, but some critics believe she is drawn too white.

Marcela Davison Aviles, president of the Mexican Heritage Corporation, said that Disney calling Sofia a Hispanic princess is "not an accurate use of the term as many in our community understand its meaning."

Blue eyed, auburn hair, pale skinned Hispanic.. That is a stretch by the norm.. Unless she is from South America and still bears resemblance to the European influx that was heavy down there for a while. Is the movie based in Mexico? Because if that's the case then she definitely isnt Hispanic..

The show certainly isn't set in Mexico or South America. Why are they even upset about this? Is it terrible that Sofia's mom raised her daughter after her husband died and eventually got married again? Isn't that a good thing? Do they expect women to jump off a cliff with their kids if the husband/father dies so they don't have to live with such a sinful existence?

The show's terrible on its own merits, hate it for any of the reasons it deserves, but don't make this some kind of crusade against single mothers.

Waiting for the spin-off "Sofia the Second."
