A 24-year-old woman pleaded guilty Monday to two felony charges for forcing an 11-year-old Haysville girl into a gas station bathroom and ordering her to urinate into a cup so the woman could use the urine to pass a court-ordered drug test.
Crystal Hopper, who listed a Wellington address after her arrest, pleaded guilty to interference with parental custody and aggravated endangering a child. She had been scheduled to stand trail this week in Sedgwick County District Court on kidnapping and robbery charges.
Prosecutors said the crimes arose from a Haysville Municipal Court case. In court papers, prosecutors said that:
On April 10, 2012, Hopper was ordered by a Municipal Court judge to take a drug test, and she was told at 3:20 p.m. that the results were positive. At 4:05 p.m. that day, Hopper returned to the courtroom and said she wanted to take the test again. The test was administered again at 5:30 p.m., and the results this time were negative.
On April 11, 2012, the girl told Haysville police that she had been approached by Hopper the day before while walking home from school. The girl said she became frightened when Hopper asked her for some urine. The girl said Hopper forced her into a gas station in the 100 block of West Grand in Haysville and escorted her into a bathroom. Hopper retrieved a cup, returned to the bathroom and obtained the girl’s urine at 3:53 p.m. The girl was then ordered by Hopper to leave.
During an interview with detectives on April 24, Hopper admitted taking the urine from the girl. She told detectives, “I don’t know why there was morphine in my urine and, ah, so I asked her to pee in a cup, just in case.”
Hopper will be sentenced July 10 by District Judge Joseph Bribiesca.
