Fueled by false cancer diagnosis, couple sold home, went on vacation.

A man named Frank was told in May 2010 that he had cancer. He and his wife, Wilma, then took to their bucket lists, crossing things off one by one. Two years later, they're $80,000 in debt and are blaming it on the New Zealand health care system—the cancer diagnosis turned out not to carry any weight, and though healthy, the couple is now broke.

Frank had a part of his lung removed after a brush with cancer, and after he went through chemotherapy, he started having chest pains and shortness of breath. Doctors diagnosed him a month later with the worst: that his cancer had likely returned to his heart, and that he only had a few months to live.
The couple did what most people would do—carpe diem! The couple sold their home, and Frank gave away $30k worth of tools, fishing gear, a bike, clothes, and household items.
After the diagnosis, Frank began smoking and drinking coffee, after quitting after the first diagnosis. Might as well throw caution to the wind, we guess.
The couple went to Fiji, spent $30,000 on food, a five-star resort, and fishing activities, expecting their life insurance to foot the bill. But such was not the case.
When they returned home, Frank felt healthy and fit every day, and doctors said his health wasn't deteriorating as they had predicted. An ultrasound proved he was cancer free, but the hospital waited a few months to tell him—something that naturally infuriated Frank and his wife.
Doctors explained, saying, "Occasionally where diagnosis is difficult and complicated by other medical conditions, like in this case, we can be wrong," but Frank and Wilma say they have lost faith in the health system and now refuse to accept medical care.
Sounds like a win-win to us: Go on a sweet vacation, don't have cancer, but it's more of a win-win-lose for the couple, since now they're broke.
