EUREKA — An El Paso man was indicted in Woodford County last week for burglary charges after allegedly choosing the backyard of an off-duty police officer to attempt to crack a safe he’d stolen from a nearby church.

James E. Fleming, 17, of 278 W. 2nd St. faces up to 15 years if convicted of the felony burglary charge associated with the June 9 incident.

On the afternoon of that date, Woodford County Court documents allege that Fleming entered Trinity Lutheran Church, 533 W. Third St., through an unlocked door and stole a safe, which he carried less than a block to a residential yard where he tried to open the safe with a screw driver.

After unsuccessful attempts, he left the area shortly before midnight and returned the next day to renew his efforts, where he was confronted by the one of the home’s resident, an off-duty Bloomington police officer, the documents allege.

Fleming was later located by police near the El Paso Post Office and taken into custody. He was placed under $50,000 bond at the Woodford County Jail
