Japan's Kyoto Aquarium makes no bones about their limited-time-only “Grilled Dog Ayu,” giving brave buyers the fish, the whole fish and nothing but the fish accompanied by lotus root chips and Perilla leaves on a crusty bun. Bonus goodness? It only costs a fin.
From July 1st through September 1st of 2013, the Aquarium's Scenic Beauty Cafe is featuring what can only be described as a rather frightful looking entree no matter what end one dares to initiate the chow-down.
Head or tail, which is the lesser of the two evils? Maybe you can flip a coin to help make the decision!

Ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) is also known as Sweetfish due to its decidedly sweet flavor; some sources describe notes of melon and cucumber when enjoying it. The most common way of doing so is by skewering the fish in a “wave” pattern and seasoning it with salt over the grill or campfire.
As Ayu are small like smelts or sardines, they're often eaten whole (bones, fins, head & all), and that can be a challenge for anyone used to having their fish fully filleted.

Therefore those calcium-challenged folks had best steer clear of the Kyoto Aquarium's Scenic Beauty Cafe, or at least opt for the regular Kyoto Pickles Dog.
Of course, the latter doesn't come with lotus root chips and Perilla leaves and may contain all sorts of unsavory parts ground to be unrecognizable.

The Grilled Dog Ayu, on the other hand, gives you all those odds & ends in their natural order, nose-to-tail as it were.
