ST. PAUL, Minn. (KARE11) - It's a number that grabs attention immediately.

Seriously... 148 miles per hour.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says a man from Darwin was the champ when it came to citations during a recent statewide crackdown on speeders. Richard Bernhagen, age 41, was ticketed for doing 148 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone on a road just outside Hutchinson.

State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske says a trooper stopped Bernhagen's 2001 Mustang GT on Tagas Avenue just before 2 p.m. July 17. The trooper says Bernhagen stated "I haven't driven it in a while and was airing it out, I was wrong."

Roeske says the driver admitted to doing 135 mph and admitted "It was stupid, I know."

Last time I got clocked in triple digits, luckily I knew the cop. He wrote it down to 85 in a 70. I was in excess of 155 when I saw the cop. He got me at 140.

From looking at the Minnesota state website, it would appear to be only a $212 fine (includes the surcharge for being more than 20 mph over the posted limit. I can't find anything else where certain speeds above the limit increase the fine. But they do have a law that if you are exceeding 100 mph, you will lose you license for 6 months (or longer) plus the fine.

Plus I suppose they could tack on other charges such as Careless & Negligent driving as well.

There's a $200 super speeder state charge in addition to the local speeding penalty here in GA. So if you're going over 75 mph on any two lane road, or over 85 mph on any other road, you're gonna be hit with the speeding fine + the $200 state charge. Keep in mind, the interstate speed limit is 70 mph. As far as I know, your license won't be suspended unless you fail to pay that $200, but then again, penalties for speeding vary a great deal between localities here in GA, so the county you got your license in might suspend your license.
