A large UPS cargo plane crashed near an airport in Birmingham, Ala., shortly before dawn, the Federal Aviation Administration said on Wednesday.

The pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash, Birmingham Mayor William Bell said. There were no reports of additional injuries.

The plane, an A300 en route to Birmingham from Louisville, crashed on its approach to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport at approximately 6 a.m. EST.

According to Birmingham's WVTM-TV, the cargo plane went down in an open field owned by the airport. Neighbors told the network they heard "a large boom and then several other explosions." Fire and smoke could be seen rising from a field in photos taken by Toby Carter, a reporter for CBS' Birmingham affiliate.

A spokeswoman for the airport said the crash occurred outside the airport's perimeter and no other flights were affected.
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were on their way to the crash site, CNN said.

"At this time, we are still determining the details of the incident," UPS said in a statement. "We will release more information as it becomes available. As we work through this difficult situation, we ask for your patience, and that you keep those involved in your thoughts and prayers."

It amazes me that doesn't happen more often. Around those hubs they have some pretty serious daily air traffic...

we print sports tickets and some other things for the US...one night we held a UPS plane on the runway to wait for our shipment

they charged us 5000 for the initial hold and 1000 dollars per minute for anything after that

 nice work if you can get it...geezus
