welcome back golfer

want the long story

Think we've beaten about the bush long enough.......

Ok, the first few times we started experiencing issues with the site was down to our initial host - they were attacked heavily and ended up selling out their business to another company, that was the first time we had to change hosts. Since then i think we've changed hosts 4 or 5 times - all started off great then went downhill....... usually involving huge downtime for us. Either the second or third host we were with, something strange happened - our server was compromised and everything in it deleted. Now, the only way that could've happened was if someone had managed to hack our main root password - can anyone tell me how long it would take to brute-force a 16 digit pass complete with upper/lower case letters, numbers and random symbols? Yeah, unlikely that it was bruteforced. This happened on more than one occasion. Strangely enough, at that same time our login info for our main site email address (the one we always used for any correspondence with hosts etc) changed 'by itself' and we couldn't access it - this too was a random 16 digit pass. At first we really couldn't figure out what the fuck was going on........ and then it hit - Fricnjay had set up the email account and he obviously knew the answers to the security questions required to reset the email account password :| We then made a fresh email account, changed all passwords and since then the server itself has never been formatted.

That was more than 6 months ago, we've been through a couple more hosts since then and the ddos attacks keep coming - a random attacker would have given up long ago i'm sure you'll agree so it's 100% personal.

To give you the background - this website was set-up by Lance, Fricnjay and myself - the three of us agreed to split all costs between us. Nearly a year into our 'venture' i discovered Lance had been paying Fricnay's share since the beginning (think Fricnjay threw in for the initial setup but nothing afterwards) and he was becoming less and less active on the forum so i sent him a friendly pm just to check that everything was ok etc (we were good mates, i was genuinely worried) - he replied saying everything was cool, a bit hectic etc, a few cashflow issues but everything would be sorted out asap and he was gonna square Lance up for what he was due. A couple of months went by and Fricnjay was hardly even visiting anymore, i think he made one post in the space of three weeks or something....... and for a guy that works on a pc all day every day that just seemed like he was avoiding us. So, Lance and myself took the hard decision to remove him as Admin - i sent him a pm to let him know, tried to be as nice as possible about it (stay on as mod and still be fully involved in the running of the forum) but it seems he took it badly. He never actually replied to my pm, instead he sent a pm to Lance having a bit of a moan............ and he never posted after that.

Our latest host is a 'managed' host so they're far more helpful than any of the previous ones........ and it seems they can detect where the attacks are coming from better than any of the previous hosts. As you can see from Lance's post, the latest attack came from Texas........ where Fricnjay lives.

Add two and two together and you get four. Of course we didn't want to believe it was him all along - hence the reason we never said anything until now........... but the evidence is becoming pretty conclusive.

So now you know........... i'd love to be proved wrong but that looks highly unlikely at this point. The attacks have now been reported to the ISP along with all the info we have.
