A Kellogg man was killed when he was struck by a train early Wednesday morning, officials said.
A train was eastbound through Kellogg shortly after 1 a.m. when employees on the train saw a person lying across the tracks, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
They activated the train’s horn and applied the brakes but the person did not move and the train was unable to stop in time, authorities said.
Employees with Iowa Interstate Railroad called authorities around 1:20 a.m. and just after 1:30 a.m. first responders located the man on the tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The individual was identified as Kyle A. Smith, 18, of Kellogg.
The incident remains under investigation.
