Phishing scam hits Modern Warfare 2 Xbox Live users
Posted Fri 29th Apr 2011 2:54pm by Michael Kendrick

But Microsoft insists the issue is not related to Xbox Live
Microsoft have said the recent phishing scams targeted at Modern Warfare 2 users on Xbox Live are not linked to any issues with the Xbox Live service itself. The company have made it clear that they are aware of the problem, and that the game's developer, Infinity Ward, are taking steps to resolve the issue in the form of an update.

The Xbox Live status page is currently showing a service alert for matchmaking in Modern Warfare 2, which reads:

"Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2."

"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

Phishing is the term used when an individual acquires personal information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by pretending to be a legitimate and trustworthy company. It's an issue which Mcirosoft have fully acknowledged and were quick to comment on.

“Microsoft is aware of the phishing problem specifically related to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2,” the company told Develop.

“We are working to resolve this.”

Microsoft was quite keen to insist that the problem was not in any way related to the Xbox Live service, following the shocking breach of the PlayStation Network last week.

“Phishing is an unfortunate and common threat on the Internet, and this problem is not related to the Xbox Live service."

“We encourage people to only do business with trusted sources and never give personal information to unfamiliar parties.”
