DYERSBURG, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Signs in one Mid-South city targeted people who drink, produce or sell alcohol. Residents were shocked by the phrases including "Satan Couldn't Be Everywhere" and "Boozers are Losers."
One Dyersburg businessman took it on himself to get rid of the signs.
"I don't want to have to walk out of here and face a sign right across the street talking to me about Satan and drinking," said businessman Stan March who frequently meets friends at a Dyersburg bar and restaurant. "It sounds crazy. I realize everybody has their own opinion."
Marsh says there were eight of the professionally-made signs in the area of the 51 Bypass and Highway 78. He complained to the mayor.
Dyersburg removed four signs put up in a flower garden. The mayor said there is a sign ordinance prohibiting the signs.
Marsh got a cell phone number for the person who put up the signs and called him.
"He just kept saying Dyersburg needs to be taught a lesson," said Marsh who said the caller hung up on him.
Marsh was never sure what that lesson was. He says the man claimed to be putting the signs up on his own.
"We ought to be able to sit up here and have a drink without walking out and seeing a sign saying Satan is sitting with us and watching us. Truth be told Satan is probably sitting at this guys house watching him," said Marsh.
All the signs have since been removed.
