An Oakland man has been convicted of murder after killing his friend, an atheist, during an argument concerning the existence of God.

Douglas Yim, 33 was found guilty of first-degree murder on Tuesday, Sept. 3, for shooting and killing Dzuy Duhn Phan, 25. Yim killed Phan after a night of partying with alcohol and cocaine, playing video games, and arguing about the existence or nonexistence of God, according to a report issued by CBS.

Paul Park, a mutual friend and witness to the murder, said the two men had engaged in a heated discussion about God’s existence during a night of drinking, doing drugs and playing video games. Park was also wounded in the shooting.

Park said that Phan was teasing Yim about his belief in God, asking Yim where God was every time Yim lost the video game. According to Park, things escalated when Yim became enraged and grabbed his gun after Phan asked Yim where God was when Yim’s father died of a stroke several years earlier.

Yim now faces 126 years to life in prison when he is sentenced in November. In addition to the murder, Yim was found guilty of assault with a firearm and mayhem for shooting a second friend (Park). Yim shot Phan at least six times, and Park was also hit by a bullet, in Yim’s living room in the early morning of April 2, 2011.
