BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A Ponchatoula woman was arrested after she allegedly placed her infant into an ice chest that had a gas can in it and closed the lid. After being booked into parish prison, she was found to be in possession of illegal narcotics and was issued additional charges.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that the incident occurred shortly after midnight on Monday, Sept. 2 at a residence located in the 12000 block of Tams Drive.
“Someone saw the suspicious activity and notified police,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Jr., Baton Rouge Police Department, explained. “A witness saw an unknown white female place an infant into an ice chest and closed the lid.”
According to the arrest report, the witness claims the woman, Jami Jo Ranson, 38, sat in a chair after placing the child in the closed ice chest. The witness said the child “continuously screamed,” but Ranson did not respond.
The witness managed to remove the child from the ice chest out of “fear for the infant’s life."
“They had enough probable cause to place Ranson under arrest and later booked her into parish prison,” Cpl. Coppola said. “Once inside the prison, while being booked, she was found to be in possession of drugs.”
Ranson allegedly had in her possession a silver container with 6 Lorazapam pills, which is a Schedule IIV narcotic.
Ranson was charged with Child Desertion, Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance, and Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Her bond was set at $10,000.
The Department of Child Services was contacted and took custody of the infant. The child was taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure.
“Our understanding is that the child was safe and unharmed,” Cpl. Coppola added.
