A 54-year-old Indianapolis man was arrested today, police said, after refusing to let his girlfriend leave his Westside home and slamming her twice to the pavement in his driveway after she ran out his front door.

Frederick Willis was watching a football game Monday night and was upset over how the game was unfolding, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.

The 50-year-old woman knew the man tended to lose control when he got upset over sports, police said. Willis lives in the 700 block of Ketcham Street — east of Tibbs Avenue and south of West 10th Street.

“He was consuming alcoholic beverages,” the report reads. “She stated that Frederick appeared to be getting worked up and she knew that he would become abusive. (The woman) stated that she wanted to leave because she knew what was coming given his behavior.”

When the woman began to leave, however, Willis became further enraged, police said, grabbing the woman by her shirt and instructing her she was not leaving. The woman made a quick move to fight past him and was walking across his driveway when the man threw her to the ground, police said.

When the woman got to her feet, police said, Willis threw her to the ground again. She was able to get up a second time and run home to call police.

When officers arrived to the woman’s home shortly after midnight today, the woman “was crying hysterically and laboring in her breathing,” an officer wrote in the report. “She had inhalers sitting in front of her on a picnic table where she was sitting down. (The woman) could only tell me that she was in pain from being thrown to the ground but could not speak anymore because she was having difficulty breathing.”

The woman complained of pain in her back, left arm and lower lip. Police observed swelling and cuts on her elbow and noted that the woman’s lower lip was split open. A medic treated her on the scene.

Police went to Willis’s home and found him walking in the street.

“Mr. Willis told police that (the woman) was crazy and that she had assaulted herself,” an officer wrote in the report.

Police arrested Willis on preliminary charges of criminal confinement and battery with injury.
