Looks to be 8 or 10 buildings and the pier. New Chopper feed up @ 17:18 more live video

16:47 Fire jumping up a few blocks to some condo's Black smoke coming from that area. No FD on scene of that fire. No units available

Looks like a 1/4 mile of the board walk and buildings involved.

17:20 A back hoe making a trench Cut North of fire.

wow from the overhead view it looks like a group of buildings sitting the farthest out on the beach...

premature (that's the way I roll..) do they know the cause yet?

That doesn't surprise me. That was one of the piers affected by Sandy. I imagine they rebuilt it as quickly as possible, so it's entirely plausible that a mistake could've been made in the process.
