A father who hit three cars after speeding down a Washington interstate high on meth wearing nothing but a woman's shirt and prosthetic breasts - as his two daughters sat in the back - has been jailed for dangerous driving.

Jonathan Harty, 31, also had a nearly-full bottle of urine and a pair of ladies pants at his feet.

Stopped by police, Harty bluntly explained he was en-route to The Dollar Store to buy toys for his daughters, aged six and four.

On Friday, Harty cried as he received his third DUI conviction - two years and five months, with his licence revoked for seven years.

Leaving King County Superior Court, Harty, from Lake Steven, Washington, said: 'I'd like to apologise to my family and my two daughters.

'I don't have any excuse for what I've done. There's no excuse for it. I've made a life-altering decision for a lot of people by my selfish actions.'

A passer-by had to rescue the children from the back of the vehicle after the incident on the I-5 between Boeing Field and Southcenter Mall in April.

Meanwhile, police dealt with Harty, who emerged sweating and incapacitated from the driver's seat.

The girls were taken to hospital and treated for bruising, before Paul Cooper, Harty's father-in-law, picked them up.

Family members told Komo News the younger girl still has nightmares and is afraid to go anywhere alone.

Mr Cooper told the court room: 'Emily pressed against me and said, "Grandpa, I don't have to go back to my daddy's anymore do I?" Your honor, at that point I broke down and cried.'

He continued: 'Jon, your actions that night came not from a father but from a cowardly monster. You put drugs above your daughters.'

Amy Harty, the mother of one of the half sisters left traumatised by their father's stunt, said: 'It makes me sick to my stomach to know Emily and her half-sister were exposed to such inappropriate behaviour, and what you put them through.'

Judge Ken Shubert said: 'I hope that the fact that your daughters were at risk and could have been killed in this incident is going to finally be the thing that wakes you up.'
