New iPhones less durable than iPhone 5

As Apple Inc. pitches its newest smartphones, users may find something lacking compared with last year's model: They could break more easily. SquareTrade, a provider of protection plans for gadgets, tested five smartphones, including Apple's new iPhones, to see if they could withstand drops, dunks and other common hazards. Its finding: The latest models aren't as durable as last year's iPhone 5. SquareTrade says the biggest loser, however, was Samsung's Galaxy S4, which failed to work after being submerged in water and being dropped 5 feet off the ground. The phone that withstood SquareTrade's torture test best was Google Inc.'s Moto X. Officials from Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and Google Inc. didn't immediately return email messages for comment.

Another bug has reportedly been found in Apple’s brand new operating system iOS 7, apparently allowing users to make phone calls on an iPhone even when it is locked.

The security glitch was unearthed by Palestinian Karam Daoud, who showed in a video how someone could dial in a number and get through despite the the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C or any iOS 7-compatible device being protected by a password.

A user is able to bring up the keypad by pressing the emergency button but instead of just being able to dial 999, you can also contact other numbers by hitting the call button numerous times.

‘Once the black screen appeared, it was pretty clear that this is a bug,’ said Mr Daoud.

‘You can dial a number anywhere, any time.’

There is reportedly already a fix in the works for the problem for the new iPhone 5S and 5C handsets, but a comparable update for earlier devices running iOS 7 is not yet available.

Last week it was revealed Apple was working to correct another flaw in its new operating system that also allowed users to bypass the lock screen.

The iPhone 5S may have only gone on sale on Friday, but hackers have already claimed to have circumvented its much-vaunted fingerprint scanner.

Touch ID was touted by Apple as a ‘convenient and highly secure’ way to access and lock its latest smartphone, but those claims have been cast into doubt by German hackers.

The Chaos Computer Club said it had bypassed the fingerprint scanner by ‘using easy everyday means’.

It conceded Touch ID had a higher-resolution scanner than other devices, but that all was needed to counter it was an equally high resolution photo of someone’s fingerprint, in this case taken from a glass surface.

This scan was then used to create a thin latex sheet that served as the fake to access a user’s iPhone 5S.

The CCC has posted a video online showing the ‘defeat’, although it does not show the hackers copying another person’s fingerprint.

We hope that this finally puts to rest the illusions people have about fingerprint biometrics. It is plain stupid to use something that you can’t change and that you leave everywhere every day as a security token,’ said Frank Rieger, spokesperson for the CCC.

‘The public should no longer be fooled by the biometrics industry with false security claims. Biometrics is fundamentally a technology designed for oppression and control, not for securing everyday device access.’

Apple is yet to comment on the apparent hack. It is already contending with two separate glitches related to its new operating system iOS 7.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/10330414/iOS-7-users-destroy-iPhones-after-fake-waterproof-advert.html

The fake commercial appeared almost identical to Apple's real poster advertising with images of the iPhone on a white background accompanied by neat text.
"Update to iOS 7 and become waterproof", the poster read.

"Whoever said ios7 was waterproof **** you," wrote one user on Twitter. "Wtf iOS7 isn't waterproof!! Now my phone's at the bottom of the river," another said.
The prank is understood to have been started by controversial forum 4Chan which has a chequered history of hosting faked material.

Last year the site came in for criticism when fake screen shots of posts supposedly written by Adam Lanza before he attacked the Sandy Hook Elementary School were posted on its message boards.
The iOS 7 has been hailed as a major step forward for Apple by the company's bosses, with chief executive Tim Cook calling it “the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone”.

Thousands of users complained of downloading problems when the new operating system launched last week, with one in three tweets about iOS 7 discussing the issue according to one study.
The iPhone 5s and 5c, preloaded with iOS 7, went on sale on Friday and sold more than nine million times in its opening weekend, nearly double the iPhone 5's five million sales when it launch in 2012.

"In an emergency, a smart-switch will shut off the phone's power supply and corresponding components to prevent any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry," it explained.
At the bottom of the poster was a promise that "waterproofing [is] covered by Apple's warranty policy".

After being shared on social media sites by users encouraging people to try the new feature soon angry complaints appeared from those fooled by the joke.
