Apple's gold iPhone 5s is not actually made of gold, but one eBay user paid the equivalent price for the new smartphone.
Bidding on a 16GB factory-unlocked "very hard to find" iPhone 5s ended Monday at 4 p.m. Eastern, with a final price tag of $10,100, plus $22.95 for shipping (image below).
Over the 24-hour bidding process, the phone's price rose consistently until it reached $2,500 about two hours before the sale ended. But one Apple fanatic made a last-minute $10,000 bid, which was ultimately topped by user y***9, who added another $100 and scored the phone. It is expected to arrive from the Connecticut seller within two business days.
Apple launched its new lineup of iPhone 5s and 5C smartphones on Friday, reporting on Monday that it sold 9 million sales of the new smartphones over the weekend. Early birds who waited in line at Apple Stores got their hands on the gadgets on Friday, but others will have to wait.
All iPhone 5s models, including the champagne-colored device, are listed on Apple's website as shipping in October, for all carriers and storage sizes. All colors and versions of the lower-end iPhone 5c, meanwhile, are listed as shipping within 24 hours.
"The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible," CEO Tim Cook said in a Monday statement. "We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."
Though October is just a week away, some eager consumers are turning to third-party options like eBay and Craigslist to snag a new phone. And while $10,000 is a hefty price to pay for a phone that sells for $549 on the Apple website, at least it's cheaper than the $15 million iPhone 5 that's blinged out with a rare black diamond, right?
