They’re more commonly used to transport goods from one side of the world to the other.

But with the addition of a flat screen TV, air con, en-suite bathroom and kitchen sink, these shipping containers are billed as the solution to the affordable housing crisis.

Brought here from China, the crates are transformed into studio apartments that can be stacked on top of each other – and are available to rent for £75 a week.

The scheme looks set to take off after securing planning permission in Waltham Forest, north east London.

The mYpads – which cost £20,000 each – are designed to allow young people to have their own rental accommodation but at a price that allows them to save for a deposit.

It is thought each of the homes could save taxpayers £25,000 a year by taking people off housing and other related benefits.

The scheme is the brainchild of the Forest YMCA, and former resident Louise Stephenson, 30, hopes to move into a container this year.

She said: ‘Your own place for £75 a week in London is unheard of. The units are going to be great.’

I've been looking into fixing one up as a hunting cabin. They would be very secure in a remote location not visited often.

Equipment trailer. The ones stacked in the picture are only twenty footers, shorter than most campers.

I'm thinking of buying one for a storage building behind my garage.
