A hunchbacked alligator is stalking the swampy wetlands of western Brazil, if these pictures are anything to go by.

The 11ft caiman was captured by British photographer Paul Goldstein while he worked in one of the world’s largest tropical wetland area, the Pantanal.

It was also the first time that any of the locals had seen such a creature, Wimbledon-based Goldstein said.

‘I have been to the Pantanal quite a bit and never seen this, more importantly, none of the local guides had either.

‘It was on its own, but apart from being light on caiman colleagues the eleven footer seemingly did not seem worse for wear’, he added.

The creature’s movements weren’t believed to have been hampered by the hunchback, which is thought to have been a birth defect or the result of an injury.
