On Wednesday, California resident Kim Segaline noticed a sticker on her 7-year-old son Preston’s shirt. “Lunch money please,” the sticker said.

Confused, Segaline asked her son, a student at Bonsall West Elementary School, why he was wearing the sticker.

“Oh, the lunch lady put that on me to wear home for my parents to see,” Preston said.

Preston has been eligible for free lunch at the school for the past two years, so Segaline was confused as to why he now needed money for lunch.

Segaline, who told Opposing Views she was shocked that the school would make her son wear a sticker that publicized her family’s financial situation, called the school to ask about their sticker policy.

A member of the food services staff told Segaline that she needed to fill out another form for this school year if Preston was to continue receiving free lunch. Segaline says that she will, of course, fill out the form. But regardless, the sticker being placed on her son still irked her.

“I did not appreciate them having my son wear a sticker saying what it said,” she said. “…they could have sent a note home with him instead in his folder. I just really don't think they should be putting a sticker on the kids like that.”

The food services employee told Segaline that a note would be sent home in his folder on Friday. In the meantime, the school puts the sticker on students to ensure their parents get the message. The school says that when children are sent home with notes, they often find the notes left in classrooms or laying on the ground.

Regardless, Segaline still thinks it’s inappropriate to make her son wear a sticker that publicizes something that should be a private issue.

they don't need to take out the politics between the school and the parents...on the child...

that sort of stigma sticks around for years and it's not the kid's fault

Kids get notes pinned to them all the time, lunch money please does not expose their shitty financial situation. Its a reminder to bring money or fill out the fucking paperwork. Nothing wrong with lunch money please

I dont know about your elementary schools, but kids always come home with stuff pinned to them.

Im so fucking tired of everyone playing the victim, this kids mom could have handled the situation properly then she wouldn't have this enormous embarrassment of a fuckin sticker reminding her to pay her fuckin bills.

that's what I'm saying...if the issue is between the parents and the school admin, throwing a sticker on a kid who formerly qualified for the free lunches is sending a message....but the message is being received by the other students, not the parents..

you've raised kids so I defer to you but that seems like a shitty message/way to get parents to pay their monthly fees...

kids are cruel no matter what, why add to it?

Right you are, buckaroo! Whoever caused this poor, plucky young lad all this trauma that will probably take years of therapy (paid for with my fucking tax dollars) should be drawn, quartered and flayed within an inch of his or her life!

Let's see. Who, pray tell, placed this before the media, ensuring this poor child years of ridicule and abuse?

Was it the school district employee(s)? Nope.

Does the kid have a social-suicidal streak? Nope.

That's right. MOMMY alerted the media. MOMMY, whose name is here for all to read, made damn sure that scores of us now know that she and her clan are mooches, and that her kid gets free lunches.

I'd say "screw her", but that would probably just result in another little mouth for us working folk to feed.

again....this issue is with the parents, no need to tag the child in his environment

If you ever had a seven-year, you'd know the odds of a note given to him to take home making it home that same day would be just about 50-50.

All students in our district, and I think in our province, have a planner that the kids write in when they're given homework, and if the teacher wants to communicate to the parent, they do that there...and the parent can do the same to the teacher, because we both know to check this book out every day.

My daughter's teacher mandates that every kid takes their book home every night, and if they forget to bring it to school so he can initial it in the morning, they must copy out a long, boring paragraph. Also, if they forget homework, the consequence is another writing out of a long, boring paragraph. Not very cruel and unusual, but enough of a deterrent to make sure they don't do it that often.

Why the pins/notes? Why not just contact the parent(s) directly over the phone?

Also, just out of curiosity, how much does a meal cost over there for these little kids? Free school dinners in elementary and secondary schools have been served in Finland since October 9, 1948 by the way... :finland:

No, if it's the same where there as it is in Colorado, that's one serving of lunch & drink per day.

So if the kid is left hungry/thirsty during the meal, too bad? I guess that is why they load them up with fatty, unhealthy food to have them feeling full faster...

i think it depends on how much food is left after your first serving and how many kids are left to eat. they don't generally save the leftovers, so if you are in the last group, you may be able to get more to eat. you would need to pay for every carton of milk

I understand the leftover policy well as this is how it has to be sometimes done over here too. The charging for every milk carton I don't...silly.

In general I agree with you, assuming (and that's a big if) that the parent involved is responsible.

However, if MOMMY here had a problem with what happened, what was she thinking when she decided to go to the media? Sure, she's gotten her 15 minutes of fame, but at whose expense? Her kids are the ones who'll be hearing about this long after we've forgotten about it.

We actually have an account at the school we deposit money into and the child can use her pin number to make purchases which we can monitor online.

I guess they avoid the issue around here altogether and don't fund any food at all in our Elementary schools.

It's only on Fridays when food is brought in and we pre-pay - the district has a rotating number of providers. But, no cafeteria in any Elementary (K-7) school around here - only in high schools.

We never even had cafeterias for our high school until we the students fundraised for it. No money in the budget for it.

Good lord that is shitty...proper food is key for students development and for them being able to focus during classes! That is part of our "secret" for doing so well for yerars and years in all sorts of international studies.
