A 7-year-old girl was left waiting at a south Wichita elementary school because her parents were engaging in a drug deal instead, authorities said.

When the school day ended Tuesday at the school, the 7-year-old girl waited to be picked up. But it didn’t happen.

Finally, at the request of the girl’s grandmother, police went to the girl’s residence in south Wichita to see whether her mother was OK.

“There was indication that the parents were out trying to purchase drugs,” said Lt. Jeff Weible of the Exploited and Missing Child Unit in an e-mail response to questions.

The 7-year-old girl and her 4-year-old sister were placed in protective custody, he said. The incident remains under investigation.
