The man widely recognised as being the inventor of the doner kebab has died aged 80.

Berlin-based Kadir Nurman set up a stall in the western part of the city in 1972.

From the stall he sold grilled meat and salad within a flat bread after noticing busy city dwellers liked the convenience of having a meal on the go, according to the BBC.

Turkish-born Mr Nurman moved to Germany at the age of 26 where he worked as a mechanic before going into catering.

While others have been credited with the accolade of being the ‘doner kebab inventor’, including another Turkish immigrant Mahmut Aygün, Mr Nurman was recognised by the Association of Turkish Donor Manufacturers in 2011.

He is thought to have been the creator of today’s doner kebab, with its skewer of meat rotating on a spit, before being sliced off into a pitta or flat bread and topped with salad and sauce.

Mr Nurman did not patent his brainchild, which eventually enjoyed widespread success all over Germany and other parts of the world.

Rest in peace you fucking legend :rip:

What is a doner kebab? Sounds like what we would call a gyros. Gyros is beef and lamb together in a pressed meat that is on a spit, then sliced off per sandwich, served on a pita with tomato, onion, and cucumber sauce.

From what I gathered they're pretty much the same thing. The only difference being the name and maybe a few ingredients depending on the locale: gyro is Greek and the doner kebab is Turkish.

For Gyro, yes, and I am assuming the doner kebab is similar.

Spam log...

It's a spit and it's layer upon layer of sliced beef/lamb/whatever, cooked while rotated in front of a standing grill/heat source. It's definitely not spam.

The cucumber sauce. Did you realize you aren't required to have it on the pita?

Cucumber sauce? :puke: I actually had a doner on friday night, was fucking lovely!! It's basically spicey lamb meat (sliced off the big log as Muddy described) in a pitta bread, then you have a choice of salad (no chance) and chilli sauce (extra sauce please  ). The place i get them from has the best chilli sauce in Perthshire bar none :homer:

I thought maybe it was what was served at the donner party in the Sierra Nevada's in 1847.
