Forecasters have warned the storm expected to sweep across England and Wales will be the ‘worst in years’.

Predictions of felled trees, power cuts and structural damage are a result of 80mph winds hurtling their way across the Atlantic ready to smash into the south of England on Monday morning.

The torrential rain and gale force winds could leave a trail of destruction including surface water floods, with the Met Office advising that 20-44mm of rain could fall within six hours overnight.

Heavy and persistent rainfall is expected to hit south-west England and Wales this evening before moving north-eastwards towards the Scottish border overnight.

An amber warning for winds has been issued for the majority of the south of England and Wales as well as the west and east Midlands on Monday.

The storm has been named St Jude – ironically the patron saint for desperate and lost causes – because his feast day is October 28, the day the full force of the storm is expected to make landfall.

The Met Office described the storm as not one ‘you would see every year’ due to its unusual pattern of gaining strength much closer to the UK than it normally would – Atlantic storms usually reach their peak further west across the ocean.

Frank Saunders, chief forecaster, said last night: ‘We are confident that a severe storm will affect Britain on Sunday night and Monday.

‘This is a developing situation and we’d advise people to stay up to date with our forecasts and warnings over the weekend, and be prepared to change their plans if necessary. We’ll continue to work closely with authorities and emergency services to ensure they are aware of the expected conditions.’

Ferry services between Plymouth and Roscoff, in addition to Penzance and the Isles of Scilly have been cancelled in preparation. Brittany Ferries, which runs one of the routes, said: ‘ We apologise for the inconvenience.’

Commuters, motorists and homeowners have been given advice from transport services and insurance companies on minimising the risk of injury or damage to property.

‘Don’t gamble driving down flooded roads and think twice before crossing a ford. If you’re using a sat-nav, be sensible and try to stick to the main routes where possible,’ said Darron Burness, head of the AA’s flood rescue team.

‘At a minimum, take a fully-charged mobile phone and warm, weatherproof clothing.’
