A MAN who fought with youths outside a restaurant, before threatening them with a police-style baton, has been jailed for nine months.

Bristol Crown Court heard Mark Fitton, left, was bruised and battered in trouble which flared outside McDonald's in Hengrove leisure park.

He then went to his car, collected the extendable baton and pursued his attackers.

The 40-year-old, of Novers Lane, Knowle West, pleaded guilty to having an offensive weapon in August.

Richard Posner, prosecuting, said CCTV showed Fitton extending the baton during the disturbance. Police found it in his car afterwards.

The court was told Fitton had 24 previous convictions for 53 offences since the age of 17, including an assault on police and battery.

Jane Chamberlin, defending, said Fitton needed medical treatment for injuries he sustained in the fracas, which he had not started. She said he was a hard-working man who cared for his mother daily after she suffered a stroke, and had been "an idiot" to fall for the youths' provocation.

As he was jailed yesterday, Fitton told Judge Mark Horton: "Thank you for destroying my life."

The judge replied: "You did that to yourself, I'm afraid."
