LOS ANGELES -- Jeep is taking its most famous, rugged vehicle back to war --at least when it comes to looks.

For those nostalgic about the utility vehicle that won World War II, not to mention Korea and Vietnam, Jeep has created a modern tribute to the original Willys.

Being shown this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new 2014 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition takes the vehicle back to its roots. Add your own big white star and the transition is largely complete, even if you don't put an unshaven sourpuss sergeant behind the wheel.

"The new Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition is a Jeep purist's dream, delivering a Jeep vehicle that harkens back to the original, classic CJs of the 1940s," said Mike Manley, CEO of Chrysler Group's Jeep brand. "This new Jeep vehicle delivers pure functionality."

That functionality includes off-road features that any GI would have dreamed of having in the dunes of north Africa. There is a Dana 44 rear axle with a limited-slip rear differential, BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires, rock rails and other stuff meant for the toughest trails. It will be powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that produces 285 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque.

The Willys Wheeler edition comes to showrooms nearly next year. Built in Toledo, Ohio, the Jeeps will be priced at $25,795 for the two-door models and $29,595 for the four-door version before delivery charges.

...and an important and completely accurate "Willys" sticker. Probably if they embossed the name like in the old days it'd go right through the metal!

Weren't WW2 jeeps green?

Wonder if VW will bring back the Kubelwagon, for old time's sake...

My uncle from England was visiting Canada and my teacher had a VW Thing (think it was called the 181 in Europe) and quipped "gee, that's the vehicle the Germans hauled me into the POW camp in"...ah, memories.

My buddy had an actual Willys jeep with a soft top (think of the TV show Mash)

he had a cowbell and a red cross painted on the hood

we were swimming and this other guy with a fancy new SUV tried to cross the river (this was around 1983-84) and the water went up to the guy's door handles and his truck stalled in the middle of the river

my buddy with the Willys backed in, attached his winch and pulled out doh-head with the shiny new SUV

we laffed and laffed and laffed

I have a similar story - a friend had an old army surplus Jeep - it's age was somewhere around the MASH era.

Another friend with a Jeep Cherokee gets stupid and does doughnuts on the wet sand and gets well stuck on the beach. He's stuck but good, and the tide's coming in fast. My friend calmly backs up, puts a rope around the front, puts it in 4WD Low and out it comes.

I'm remembering when I dated a girl with a YJ. This was when they made a really big resurgence in the late 80's here in N. America.

Lots of fun in the sun, but once we had a real freak of a guy belittle us at a light saying "True Jeeps have ROUND headlights!" in deference to the new YJs square ones. That's why when they redesigned it they gave it round halogens...

A boss had an old metallic gold CJ and it rode rough as anything. But it was very powerful and light with a nicely built V8.

I can't recall the make of the new SUV....of course they didn't call them SUV's back then

I think my buddy's jeep was 1947 Willys....it was indestructible

Yep - a little rusty but yes I do...actually was going to ferret it out but I have only the use of 4 fingers on my right hand, so it makes it hard to rummage...will do when the finger heals (from cutting a pumpkin)

Speaking of YJ's.... I brought this one back to life. Enjoyed it for a while and traded it for a piece of shit mustang. By far one of the biggest regrets of my life.

Complete Repaint. lifted it a couple of inches, Got rid of the Hard Top,new windshield frame, new seats, wheels/tires, rebuilt engine.(You can see the leaking oil in before pic) It didn't have A/C. It was a fair weather vehicle in FL. So that distracted me from driving it on hot summer days. So I traded it for a Mustang 5.0 convertible that turned out to be one of the biggest POS I ever owned. My wife to this day never lets me forget what a mistake I made, and it's the only time she whines and complains about me wasting money on project cars.

As for the Harley Propaganda, it's stated in the buyers contract you have to advertise for them when you own one of their products.

Life was much easier before the kids grew up...nice toys and then it's all gone!

Agreed. I like a vehicle in the driveway that sits there and when you look at it it says "c'mon, drive me!" That YJ definitely looks like a vehicle to have adventures in.

Might be, Hal. At 7, my bro saw I had a crappy bike and wanted to buy me a new one...he's 18 years older than I and was on vacation.

Dad forbid it as money was tight and he was proud, so my bro did something even better. Basically he replaced everything but the frame. The bike ended up looking very like the pic you posted, Hal, with a big wheel at the back and a smaller one up front, sissy bar, banana seat...the works.

this would have been 1971, so bike parts were particularly Groovy. :)
