View Full Version : Tomatoes : Vegetable or Fruit?

Lots of people (LIKE RED) incorrectly assume that a tomato is a fruit. They've probably heard that since tomatoes have seeds, they are considered in the fruit family. Botanically speaking, this is correct. But that definition would also mean that things like cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts are fruits too. Which is asinine and absurd.

Your supermarket doesn't display tomatoes among the apples, oranges and bananas. They sit with the vegetables...

Tomatoes are not sweet, and they are never found in a pie, on a cookie or in jello...

and finally...I rarely use links to get my point across, this time I think it's important to get a more educated view on the matter...

Tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash are fruits. Technically, the green bean is a fruit as well, although it's not ripened. And technically, the walnut (as well as other nuts) is a seed.

The proper scientific designations of these things are neither asinine nor absurd. What's asinine and absurd is that popular culture decides to call them something different 'just because'.

Pizza is a pie and tomatoes are found in pizza...

All that shit is a "fruit" of the plant that produced it.. Meaning its made for reproduction.. Technically it is a fruit. Im sorry..

Botanically the tomato is a fruit, only in the culinary arts is it considered a vegetable.

So in this case: science > cooking

Therefore: tomato = fruit

No, the banana is a fruit, but the tree it comes from is technically an herb.

Tomato = vegetable. Sure, scientifically it is a fruit, but not a whole lot of people perceive it as a fruit.
And yes, tomato is found in many pies. Not just a pizza pie.

I don't eat tomatoes, but I do use ketchup and enjoy the tomato sauce in pizza.

My aunt used to make the best real Mac n Cheese. One day she put in a whole bunch of cooked tomatoes. I would have cut off my left nut for a macaroni meal when I was young...Took one bite, refused to eat another drop...and gave her such a mouthful of criticism/bitching that my family remembered the event for years

Testament of family love...she never put tomatoes in it again for years after when we visited..
