The former lead singer of British rock band Lostprophets has pleaded guilty to a series of sexual offenses, including trying to rape a baby.

Ian Watkins, 36, was arrested last December and charged with more than 20 offenses, including raping a baby, conspiring to sexually assault a child and making indecent images.

He had denied the charges but changed his plea Tuesday at Cardiff Crown Court in Wales and admitted 11 offenses, including sexually touching a 1-year-old, encouraging a groupie to abuse her child and making child pornography. He maintained that he was not guilty of the rape charge.

"He accepts he was a determined and committed pedophile," prosecutor Chris Clee told the court.

The evidence against Watkins was derived from computers and mobile phones. The court said the singer had filmed some of the abusive activity. Watkins will be sentenced on Dec. 18.

Two other women involved in the case also avoided trial by pleading guilty to charges including sexual assault and conspiracy to rape a baby.

"There will not be a trial in this case," the judge told jurors in court. "The defendants have all pleaded guilty to nearly all the charges against them. You have been saved from having to watch extremely graphic and distressing material."

Lostprophets was formed in 1997 and had a chart-topping British album in 2006 with "Liberation Transmission." They scored a No. 1 hit on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in 2004 with "Last Train Home." In October they announced they were disbanding.

"After nearly a year of coming to terms with our heartache, we finally feel ready to announce publicly what we have thought privately for some time," a statement read. "We can no longer continue making or performing music as Lostprophets."

I sort of knew Watkins for a short while before the Prophets made it big, I'm from the same town as most of the band, my best friend through school was also a guitarist with the band, but left to join another one "on the way to getting a deal", which inevitably fell through and during that time the Prophets got a deal (yeah, he admits it sucks to be him!), for a short time I had fwb status with Guitarist Lee Gaze's sister Sophie, while we were in college together.

This whole thing has had a massive shockwave through the local area, and I honestly feel sorry for his family, close friends and band mates.
The things he's now admitted too are despicable to begin fathoming, and he needs serious punishment!!

All we're hearing around here now is that his band mates "must have known" he was doing this stuff, perhaps they knew he was up to something weird, but not to this degree of depravity. I also hear off a friend quite close to the band that from 2007 onwards he started drifting away from the rest of them, travelling separate to the band, staying in a different part or entirely different hotel, missing for days at a time unable to be contacted etc etc.
I guess only the boys know the truth as to what they actually know and what they thought they know.

It's been public knowledge/rumour locally that he's a heavy drug using weirdo for years, even going up to the local University's Student Union to pick up the groupies, and them then recounting tales of sordid sexual encounters with him, and his attempt to push drugs on them as part of the depravity.

But one things for sure, they're music careers are effectively over. I cant see any bands taking on any of them as they'd not want the stigma and label 'former lost prophets member' in their band.

Gotta hate it when it hits close to home...

I feel bad for his bandmates too....what a stigma to carry around because of one guy

Exactly Hal.

The ones who will be more affected are the family that still live in the area, Most of the band now live in the states, but their families are still here getting on with their lives.

The decision to end the band was the right move to do. there's no way in hell anyone would book them under the Lost Prophets name on any line-up.

As you said, they have to carry the stigma round with them forever now, impacting on their life for years to come.
One of the band has a growing success with an art business, i hope he doesnt suffer from this.
