New York: ‘Four killed’ after train derails in Bronx

At least four people have been killed and 63 injured after a passenger train derailed in New York City, reports claim.

Local police said the Metro-North train derailed in the Bronx on Sunday morning.

An eyewitness initially claimed some of the carriages were submerged in water but pictures from the scene later showed the train had come to a halt just before where the Harlem River meets the Hudson.

The Fire Department of New York said the derailment occurred at 7.20am local time (12.20pm UK time) and 130 firefighters were on the scene dealing with ‘multiple injuries’. Later reports said four people had died.

The accident happened near the Spuyten Duyvil station, with photos taken of the scene showing eight carriages derailed.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has temporarily suspended the Hudson line between Croton Harmon and Grand Central station in New York.
